640 x 480 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize
What is 640×480 (VGA)?
640 × 480 is VGA, the resolution IBM introduced with its Video Graphics Array in 1987. It became the baseline of the PC era and later the default size of early webcams, first-generation digital cameras and phone cameras. Today it is the go-to size when a system asks for a small 4:3 image: legacy software, embedded displays, industrial panels, older kiosks and online forms that still cap photos at VGA.
At a glance: 640 × 480 pixels, aspect ratio 4:3, 307,200 pixels in total (about 0.31 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Fit with background mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.
How to resize an image to 640×480
- Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
- Check the framing. The size is preset to 640 × 480 with Fit with background: the whole picture stays visible and empty space is filled with white, black, light grey, any colour you pick or transparency (PNG, WebP). Prefer no borders? Switch to Crop to fill and choose which part to keep.
- Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 640×480 dimensions.
- Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
- Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-640x480 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.
Where 640×480 is used
- Forms and legacy web apps that only accept images up to 640 × 480
- Small 4:3 LCD panels, digital photo frames and embedded or kiosk displays
- Webcam-style snapshots and test images for computer-vision or OCR scripts
- Lightweight email attachments and 4:3 thumbnails for older slide templates
Images with a different aspect ratio
Photos from most phones and compact cameras are already 4:3, so they scale down to 640 × 480 with nothing lost. Widescreen material is the problem: by default this page uses Fit with background, which keeps the whole frame and adds bars, while Crop to fill removes the edges instead. For example, a 16:9 video frame or screenshot (1920 × 1080) set to 640×480 with Crop to fill loses about 25% of its width (left and right edges); with Fit with background it becomes 640 × 360 px with bars of about 60 px above and below.
Tips for a sharp 640×480 result
At only 0.31 megapixels, VGA shows every flaw in a busy picture, so crop tightly around the subject before resizing. A JPG at 80 to 90% quality usually weighs 40 to 90 KB at this size; if a portal demands less, switch on Target size and type the limit. Enlarging a tiny image to 640 × 480 will look soft, so tick Don't enlarge smaller images when the originals may be smaller.
Free, private and made for batches
Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 800×600 or 854×480; the 4:3 image resizer keeps any picture in the same proportions at a size you choose, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions
What resolution is 640x480?
640 × 480 is VGA (Video Graphics Array): 640 pixels wide, 480 tall, a 4:3 aspect ratio and about 0.31 megapixels.
Is 640x480 the same as 480p?
It has 480 lines like SD video, but 480p television and DVD footage use 720 × 480 or 704 × 480 with non-square pixels. 640 × 480 is the square-pixel 4:3 equivalent used by computers and webcams.
How do I resize a 16:9 image to 640x480 without cutting it?
Keep the default Fit with background mode. The whole widescreen picture is scaled to 640 pixels wide and bars fill the top and bottom; pick their colour or make them transparent in PNG or WebP.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Resizing to 640×480 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.
Can I resize many images to 640×480 at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 640×480 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.
What aspect ratio is 640 x 480?
640 x 480 pixels has an aspect ratio of 4:3, so the width is 1.33 times the height.
What is the difference between 640x480 and 480x640?
They hold the same number of pixels, but 640x480 is landscape and 480x640 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 640 × 480; for 480 × 640, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
