How to resize an image to 854×480 online
What is 854×480 (FWVGA, 480p 16:9)?
854 × 480 is 480p in widescreen with square pixels, also known as FWVGA (Full Wide VGA). The width comes from 480 × 16 ÷ 9 = 853.3, rounded up to 854. It is the size a 480p stream uses on YouTube and other players, and it was the screen of early widescreen smartphones such as the original Motorola Droid.
At a glance: 854 × 480 pixels, aspect ratio 16:9, 409,920 pixels in total (about 0.41 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Fit with background mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.
How to resize an image to 854×480
- Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
- Check the framing. The size is preset to 854 × 480 with Fit with background: the whole picture stays visible and empty space is filled with white, black, light grey, any colour you pick or transparency (PNG, WebP). Prefer no borders? Switch to Crop to fill and choose which part to keep.
- Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 854×480 dimensions.
- Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
- Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-854x480 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.

Images with a different aspect ratio
Any 16:9 source (1080p screenshots, 4K video frames, most TV and monitor captures) scales straight to 854 × 480 with no bars and nothing cut off. Phone photos in 4:3 are taller: the default Fit with background keeps them whole with side bars, and Crop to fill removes part of the top and bottom. For example, a 4:3 phone photo (4032 × 3024) set to 854×480 with Crop to fill loses about 25% of its height (top and bottom edges); with Fit with background it becomes 640 × 480 px with bars of about 107 px on the left and right.
Tips for a sharp 854×480 result
Some video encoders prefer widths divisible by 8 or 16 and use 852 × 480 or 848 × 480 instead; if yours complains, type that width in the Size box. For crisp text, start from a larger 16:9 original and scale down rather than enlarging a small one. A JPG at 85% quality usually stays under 100 KB at this size, ideal for fast previews.
Free, private and made for batches
Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 960×540 or 1280×720; the 16:9 image resizer keeps any picture in the same proportions at a size you choose, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions
Why is 480p 854x480 and not 853x480?
480 × 16 ÷ 9 is 853.33, which is rounded up to an even 854 so the frame keeps a 16:9 shape with whole pixels. Some encoders use 852 or 848 to get widths divisible by 4, 8 or 16.
What is the difference between 854x480 and 720x480?
854 × 480 uses square pixels, so it looks 16:9 on any screen. 720 × 480 is the DVD/NTSC storage size with non-square pixels that a player stretches to 4:3 or 16:9.
Is 854x480 good enough for a YouTube thumbnail?
No. YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 for custom thumbnails. Use the 1280x720 resizer for thumbnails and keep 854 × 480 for 480p video frames and previews.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Resizing to 854×480 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.
Can I resize many images to 854×480 at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 854×480 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.
