About this tool
This video compressor makes MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos smaller so they fit chat apps, email and upload forms. Choose a quality level, or type the size you need, such as 8 MB for Discord or 16 MB for WhatsApp, and the tool calculates the right bitrate for you. Compression runs in your browser with your device's own video encoder, so the video is never uploaded and stays private.
How to compress a video
- Drop the video on the page or click to choose it.
- Choose By quality (High quality, Balanced or Smallest) or By file size and enter a size in MB.
- Optionally lower the resolution or remove the audio.
- Click Compress video, check the preview and the new size, then download the MP4.
Size limits worth knowing
| Where | Typical limit | Preset |
|---|---|---|
| Discord (free) | about 8 to 10 MB | 8 MB |
| WhatsApp video message | about 16 MB | 16 MB |
| Gmail and most email | 25 MB attachments | 25 MB |
Limits change from time to time, so leave a little room: a target slightly under the limit avoids a failed send.
How much smaller will it get?
Phone videos are recorded at a very high bitrate, often 10 to 20 Mbps for 1080p. Re-encoding at a sensible bitrate typically cuts the size by 50 to 90 percent with little visible change. The biggest savings come from lowering the resolution: a 4K or 1080p clip watched on a phone looks almost the same at 720p, at a fraction of the size.
Tips for the best result
- Long video, small target? Choose 480p or 360p. A small file at full resolution looks blocky; a lower resolution stays sharp.
- Screen recordings compress very well because most of the screen does not move.
- Remove the audio for silent clips, product demos and GIF-like loops to save even more.
- Trim first if you only need part of the video: fewer seconds means more quality per MB.
The output is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays on every phone, browser and editor. Need only the sound? Use the MP4 to MP3 converter. Making a short loop? Try the video to GIF converter.

Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video without losing quality?
Choose High quality, keep the original resolution and compress. Phone videos use far more bitrate than needed, so the file usually gets much smaller with almost no visible change.
How do I compress a video for WhatsApp or Discord?
Choose By file size and pick the 16 MB WhatsApp or 8 MB Discord preset. The tool calculates the bitrate so the video fits. For long videos, also pick 480p for a sharper result.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is compressed in your browser using your device's video encoder. It never leaves your computer or phone.
Which formats can I compress?
MP4, MOV (including iPhone videos), WebM and MKV. The result is an MP4 that plays everywhere.
Why is my compressed video not smaller?
The video was already well compressed. Choose Smallest, a lower resolution, or a size target to force a smaller file.
Which browsers work?
Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari on computers and phones. They provide the hardware video encoder the tool uses. In other browsers the tool falls back to WebM where possible.
