About this tool
This MP4 to WAV converter extracts the soundtrack of a video and saves it as an uncompressed WAV file. WAV is the format audio editors, samplers and many transcription and broadcast workflows expect: it decodes instantly, cuts at any sample and does not lose quality when you edit and save it again. WAV is selected by default on this page, and besides MP4 you can use MOV, WebM and MKV videos. The conversion runs inside your browser, so the video stays on your device.
How to convert MP4 to WAV
- Drop the video on the page or click to choose it.
- WAV is already selected as the format.
- Optionally enter a start and end time, or tick Mono.
- Click Convert to WAV, listen to the result and download it.
What WAV do you get?
The file is 16-bit PCM, the same depth as an audio CD, at the sample rate of the video's audio track, which the tool shows before you convert. Phones and cameras record at 48 kHz, and most downloaded music videos use 44.1 kHz. Surround tracks are mixed down to stereo.
How big will the WAV be?
| Video length | 48 kHz stereo | 48 kHz mono |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | about 11 MB | about 5.5 MB |
| 10 minutes | about 110 MB | about 55 MB |
| 1 hour | about 660 MB | about 330 MB |
Unlike MP3, WAV size depends only on length, sample rate and channels, so there is no bitrate to pick. Use the trim fields to keep just the scene you need.
When WAV is the right choice
- Editing: clean up dialogue, remove noise or add effects in Audacity, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve or a DAW.
- Sampling and music production: drop a sound from your own footage straight onto a track.
- Tools that only accept WAV: some transcription services, old samplers and game engines.
- Burning an audio CD from a concert or recital video.
A WAV cannot add quality the MP4 never had: the video's AAC audio is decoded and stored without any further loss. That is exactly what you want for editing, but for simple listening an MP3 is about eight times smaller. For that, use the MP4 to MP3 converter. Need a written transcript of the video instead? Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MP4 to WAV for free?
Drop the MP4 on this page. WAV is already selected, so just click Convert to WAV and download the file. It is free, has no watermark and needs no sign-up.
What quality is the WAV file?
It is 16-bit PCM at the same sample rate as the video's audio, usually 44.1 or 48 kHz, in stereo or mono. That is CD quality and is accepted by every audio editor.
Why is the WAV so much bigger than the MP4?
The MP4 stores compressed AAC audio. WAV stores every sample uncompressed, about 11 MB per minute at 48 kHz stereo. Tick Mono to halve it, or trim the parts you do not need.
Does converting to WAV improve the sound?
No. It keeps exactly the quality of the video's audio and adds no further loss, which makes it ideal for editing. It cannot restore detail that was lost when the video was made.
Can I convert MOV or MKV to WAV?
Yes. MOV from iPhone, WebM and MKV videos work the same way, as do audio files such as M4A, MP3, OGG and FLAC.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The audio is extracted and converted in your browser on your own device. The video never leaves your computer or phone.
