How to resize an image to 1280×720 online
What is 1280×720 (HD 720p)?
1280 × 720 is HD 720p, the first high-definition video format and still a common streaming resolution. It is also the size YouTube recommends for custom video thumbnails: 1280 × 720 with a minimum width of 640 pixels and a file under 2 MB. Game clips, webinar recordings and many social video previews use the same 16:9 frame.
At a glance: 1280 × 720 pixels, aspect ratio 16:9, 921,600 pixels in total (about 0.92 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Crop to fill mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.
How to resize an image to 1280×720
- Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
- Check the framing. The size is preset to 1280 × 720 with Crop to fill: the frame is filled edge to edge and whatever does not fit is trimmed. Use Keep (center, top, bottom, left or right) to choose which part survives, or switch to Fit with background or Stretch.
- Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 1280×720 dimensions.
- Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
- Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-1280x720 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.

Images with a different aspect ratio
This page starts in Crop to fill, because a thumbnail must fill the whole 16:9 frame. A 16:9 screenshot or video frame just scales down; a 4:3 or portrait photo is trimmed, and the Keep buttons let you hold on to the top (faces), center or bottom. For example, a 4:3 phone photo (4032 × 3024) set to 1280×720 with Crop to fill loses about 25% of its height (top and bottom edges); with Fit with background it becomes 960 × 720 px with bars of about 160 px on the left and right.
Tips for a sharp 1280×720 result
To stay under YouTube's 2 MB limit, choose JPG and switch on Target size with 1 MB or 500 KB; the tool keeps the exact 1280 × 720 and lowers only the quality. Big text and faces read best, because thumbnails are usually shown much smaller in search results and sidebars. Don't start from a 640-pixel image: enlarging it to 720p makes the thumbnail look soft.
Free, private and made for batches
Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 1920×1080 or 1366×768; the 16:9 image resizer keeps any picture in the same proportions at a size you choose, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), with a minimum width of 640 px, in JPG, PNG or GIF and under 2 MB.
How do I get my thumbnail under 2 MB?
Choose JPG and switch on Target size, then pick 1 MB or 500 KB. The tool keeps 1280 × 720 exactly and only lowers the quality as much as needed.
Is 1280x720 HD?
Yes. 1280 × 720 is HD or 720p; Full HD (1080p) is 1920 × 1080 and has 2.25 times as many pixels.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Resizing to 1280×720 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.
Can I resize many images to 1280×720 at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 1280×720 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.
