960 x 540 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize
What is 960×540 (qHD)?
960 × 540 is qHD (quarter HD, with a small q): exactly half the width and half the height of 1920 × 1080, so it holds one quarter of Full HD's pixels. It was the screen resolution of several 2011 to 2012 smartphones such as the HTC Sensation, and today it is a practical 16:9 size for web previews, blog images and video thumbnails that should load fast.
At a glance: 960 × 540 pixels, aspect ratio 16:9, 518,400 pixels in total (about 0.52 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Fit with background mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.
How to resize an image to 960×540
- Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
- Check the framing. The size is preset to 960 × 540 with Fit with background: the whole picture stays visible and empty space is filled with white, black, light grey, any colour you pick or transparency (PNG, WebP). Prefer no borders? Switch to Crop to fill and choose which part to keep.
- Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 960×540 dimensions.
- Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
- Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-960x540 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.
Where 960×540 is used
- Half-size previews of 1080p screenshots, renders and video frames
- Inline 16:9 images in blogs, newsletters and documentation
- Placeholder or poster frames for embedded videos
- Small 16:9 screens, dashboards and signage modules
Images with a different aspect ratio
Because 960 × 540 is exactly 50% of Full HD, a 1920 × 1080 image scales down cleanly with every 2 × 2 block becoming one pixel: sharp, with no bars. Other 16:9 sources also fit perfectly. For 4:3 phone photos, the default Fit with background keeps everything and adds side bars; Crop to fill trims the top and bottom. For example, a 4:3 phone photo (4032 × 3024) set to 960×540 with Crop to fill loses about 25% of its height (top and bottom edges); with Fit with background it becomes 720 × 540 px with bars of about 120 px on the left and right.
Tips for a sharp 960×540 result
Don't confuse qHD with QHD: 2560 × 1440 is QHD (quad HD), 16 times more pixels. For retina screens, consider exporting 1920 × 1080 and displaying it at 960 × 540 in your page. At this size a WebP at 80 to 85% quality usually weighs well under 100 KB, which makes it a good choice for page speed.
Free, private and made for batches
Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 854×480 or 1920×1080; the 16:9 image resizer keeps any picture in the same proportions at a size you choose, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions
What is qHD resolution?
qHD (quarter HD) is 960 × 540 pixels, a 16:9 size with a quarter of the pixels of 1920 × 1080 Full HD, about 0.52 megapixels.
Is qHD the same as QHD?
No. qHD with a lower-case q is 960 × 540; QHD (quad HD) is 2560 × 1440, four times the pixels of 720p.
How do I halve a 1920x1080 image?
Drop it on this page: 960 × 540 is exactly 50% of Full HD, so the image is scaled without cropping or bars. For other sizes use percentage resizing.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Resizing to 960×540 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.
Can I resize many images to 960×540 at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 960×540 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.
What aspect ratio is 960 x 540?
960 x 540 pixels has an aspect ratio of 16:9, so the width is 1.78 times the height.
What is the difference between 960x540 and 540x960?
They hold the same number of pixels, but 960x540 is landscape and 540x960 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 960 × 540; for 540 × 960, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
