1600 x 900 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize

What is 1600×900 (HD+)?

1600 × 900 is HD+, sometimes called 900p: a true 16:9 resolution between 720p and 1080p. It was a popular step up from 1366 × 768 on 14- to 17.3-inch laptops and on 20-inch monitors. Outside screens it is a handy web size: large enough for full-width blog headers and featured images, but lighter than Full HD.

At a glance: 1600 × 900 pixels, aspect ratio 16:9, 1,440,000 pixels in total (about 1.44 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Fit with background mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.

How to resize an image to 1600×900

  1. Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
  2. Check the framing. The size is preset to 1600 × 900 with Fit with background: the whole picture stays visible and empty space is filled with white, black, light grey, any colour you pick or transparency (PNG, WebP). Prefer no borders? Switch to Crop to fill and choose which part to keep.
  3. Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 1600×900 dimensions.
  4. Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
  5. Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-1600x900 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.

Where 1600×900 is used

  • Wallpapers for HD+ laptops and 20-inch 1600 × 900 monitors
  • Featured images and full-width headers on blogs
  • 16:9 slides and graphics for web presentations
  • Downscaled 1080p screenshots that stay readable

Images with a different aspect ratio

Any 16:9 source scales to 1600 × 900 without bars or cropping. For 4:3 photos, the default Fit with background mode keeps the whole image with side bars; choose Crop to fill and keep the center, top or bottom when you want the frame filled edge to edge. For example, a 4:3 phone photo (4032 × 3024) set to 1600×900 with Crop to fill loses about 25% of its height (top and bottom edges); with Fit with background it becomes 1200 × 900 px with bars of about 200 px on the left and right.

Tips for a sharp 1600×900 result

Downscaling 1920 × 1080 to 1600 × 900 is a gentle 83% step, so fine text in screenshots stays legible. For the web, a WebP at 80% usually lands around 100 to 250 KB, often half the size of a comparable JPG. If a platform only needs “at least 1600 px wide”, use Max mode to keep the original proportions.

Free, private and made for batches

Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 1366×768 or 1920×1080; the 16:9 image resizer keeps any picture in the same proportions at a size you choose, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1600x900 resolution called?

It is HD+ (also 900p), a 16:9 resolution of 1.44 megapixels between HD 720p and Full HD 1080p.

Is 1600x900 good for a blog header?

Yes. It is wide enough for most content columns and full-width headers while staying much lighter than 1920 × 1080, especially as WebP.

Will a 1920x1080 image lose quality at 1600x900?

It has fewer pixels, but the downscale is smooth: the tool resizes in high quality, so edges and text stay clean.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Resizing to 1600×900 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.

Can I resize many images to 1600×900 at once?

Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 1600×900 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.

What aspect ratio is 1600 x 900?

1600 x 900 pixels has an aspect ratio of 16:9, so the width is 1.78 times the height.

What is the difference between 1600x900 and 900x1600?

They hold the same number of pixels, but 1600x900 is landscape and 900x1600 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 1600 × 900; for 900 × 1600, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
