800 x 600 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize

What is 800×600 (SVGA)?

800 × 600 is SVGA (Super VGA), the standard monitor resolution of the late 1990s and for years the size web designers built pages for. It lives on in budget and education projectors with a native SVGA panel, in 4:3 presentation templates, and in countless websites, forums and CMS themes that ask for images of 800 × 600 or smaller.

At a glance: 800 × 600 pixels, aspect ratio 4:3, 480,000 pixels in total (about 0.48 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Fit with background mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.

How to resize an image to 800×600

  1. Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
  2. Check the framing. The size is preset to 800 × 600 with Fit with background: the whole picture stays visible and empty space is filled with white, black, light grey, any colour you pick or transparency (PNG, WebP). Prefer no borders? Switch to Crop to fill and choose which part to keep.
  3. Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 800×600 dimensions.
  4. Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
  5. Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-800x600 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.

Where 800×600 is used

  • Slides and images for projectors with a native SVGA (800 × 600) panel
  • Classic 4:3 PowerPoint or Keynote templates
  • Upload forms, forums and listing sites with an 800 × 600 maximum
  • Product and article images for older, fixed-width website themes

Images with a different aspect ratio

A 4:3 photo from a phone or compact camera fits 800 × 600 perfectly. Widescreen screenshots and 16:9 video frames do not: the default Fit with background keeps them whole with bars, and Crop to fill trims the sides so the frame is full. For example, a 16:9 video frame or screenshot (1920 × 1080) set to 800×600 with Crop to fill loses about 25% of its width (left and right edges); with Fit with background it becomes 800 × 450 px with bars of about 75 px above and below.

Tips for a sharp 800×600 result

On a projector, an image at exactly the panel's native 800 × 600 is shown pixel for pixel, which keeps text sharper than letting the projector scale a larger picture. At 0.48 megapixels a JPG at 85 to 90% quality typically ends up around 60 to 150 KB. If you only want to limit the size (for example to 800 px wide) without forcing 4:3, switch the size mode from Exact to Max.

Free, private and made for batches

Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 640×480 or 1280×800; the 4:3 image resizer keeps any picture in the same proportions at a size you choose, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions

What is 800x600 resolution called?

800 × 600 is SVGA (Super VGA), a 4:3 resolution of about 0.48 megapixels that followed 640 × 480 VGA.

What aspect ratio is 800x600?

4:3, the same shape as most phone and compact camera photos, so those images resize to 800 × 600 without cropping.

How do I make an image at most 800x600 without changing its shape?

Choose Max instead of Exact in the Size settings. The image is scaled down to fit inside 800 × 600 and keeps its own aspect ratio, so nothing is cropped and no bars are added.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Resizing to 800×600 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.

Can I resize many images to 800×600 at once?

Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 800×600 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.

What is the difference between 800x600 and 600x800?

They hold the same number of pixels, but 800x600 is landscape and 600x800 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 800 × 600; for 600 × 800, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
