720 x 480 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize

What is 720×480 (SD 480p, NTSC DVD)?

720 × 480 is the frame size of standard-definition NTSC video: DVDs, DV camcorders and 480i/480p broadcasts in North America and Japan. It is stored as 3:2 but is not meant to be shown that way. SD video uses non-square pixels, so a DVD player stretches or squeezes the frame to display it at 4:3 or at 16:9 (anamorphic widescreen). Its European counterpart, PAL, uses 720 × 576.

At a glance: 720 × 480 pixels, aspect ratio 3:2, 345,600 pixels in total (about 0.35 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Fit with background mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.

How to resize an image to 720×480

  1. Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
  2. Check the framing. The size is preset to 720 × 480 with Fit with background: the whole picture stays visible and empty space is filled with white, black, light grey, any colour you pick or transparency (PNG, WebP). Prefer no borders? Switch to Crop to fill and choose which part to keep.
  3. Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 720×480 dimensions.
  4. Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
  5. Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-720x480 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.

Where 720×480 is used

  • DVD menu backgrounds, chapter thumbnails and title cards for NTSC discs
  • Still images inserted into SD 480p video timelines
  • Replacement frames and slates for DV and SD broadcast footage
  • Matching the native frame size of old capture cards and camcorders

Images with a different aspect ratio

Because 720 × 480 is a 3:2 storage size, the default Fit with background mode shows how a square-pixel image would look in it, with bars where the shapes differ. For DVD work there is a better route: design your artwork at 640 × 480 (for 4:3) or 854 × 480 (for 16:9), then resize it here with Stretch. The player's pixel aspect ratio undoes the squeeze, so circles stay round on screen. For example, a 4:3 phone photo (4032 × 3024) set to 720×480 with Crop to fill loses about 11% of its height (top and bottom edges); with Fit with background it becomes 640 × 480 px with bars of about 40 px on the left and right.

Tips for a sharp 720×480 result

Keep titles and buttons inside the central 90% of the frame, because many TVs overscan and cut the edges of SD video. Save menus as PNG to keep flat colours and text crisp; use JPG at about 90% for photos. The 3:2 file you download will look slightly squashed or stretched on a computer screen. That is normal for SD video and is corrected by the player.

Free, private and made for batches

Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 640×480 or 854×480; the custom image resizer handles any other width and height, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 720x480 4:3 or 16:9?

Both, depending on the flag in the video. The 720 × 480 frame uses non-square pixels and is displayed as 4:3 or as 16:9 anamorphic widescreen; as square pixels it would be 3:2.

What size should a DVD menu image be?

NTSC DVD menus are 720 × 480 (PAL uses 720 × 576). Design at 640 × 480 or 854 × 480 with square pixels, then resize to 720 × 480 with Stretch so the menu looks correct on the TV.

Why does my 720x480 image look stretched on my computer?

Computers show pixels as squares, while DVD players display this frame at 4:3 or 16:9. The file is correct for video; it only looks distorted in an ordinary image viewer.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Resizing to 720×480 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.

Can I resize many images to 720×480 at once?

Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 720×480 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.

What is the difference between 720x480 and 480x720?

They hold the same number of pixels, but 720x480 is landscape and 480x720 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 720 × 480; for 480 × 720, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
