How to make an image square
Square images are everywhere: Instagram posts and carousels, profile pictures, app icons, product grids and marketplace listings. A 1:1 aspect ratio means width and height are equal, so every image lines up neatly in a grid regardless of how the original was shot.
This resizer turns any photo into a 1080 × 1080 pixel square, the standard size for Instagram feed posts. By default it uses Crop to fill: the square is filled completely and the longer side is trimmed, keeping the centre. Switch to Fit with background to keep the whole picture and add even borders in white or any colour, which suits products and artwork that must not be cut.
How to use the Square Image Resizer (1:1)
- Drop your images onto the upload area, click it to choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. This page accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files, many at once and up to 80 MB each.
- Keep 1080 × 1080 or type another square size such as 500, 800 or 2000 pixels.
- Choose Crop to fill and the part to keep (center, top, bottom, left or right), or Fit with background and a border colour.
- Check the result with the before/after slider: drag the divider across the preview and read the new dimensions, file size, quality and percentage saved underneath. Any change to the settings re-processes every image automatically.
- Download a single image, or use Download all (ZIP) for the whole batch. Under More options you can also set a DPI value and a file-name pattern with {name}, {w} and {h}.
Where square images are used
- Instagram posts, which display squares at 1080 pixels wide.
- Profile pictures for social networks, forums and messaging apps; see also profile picture maker.
- Product listings, where consistent squares make category pages look tidy.
- Other fixed squares are available as 1080×1080 and 1200×1200.
Common square sizes
320 × 320 or 400 × 400 pixels suit profile pictures, 1080 × 1080 is the Instagram standard, and 1200 × 1200 to 2000 × 2000 pixels suit product images that need zoom. Whatever the size, square images keep the same shape, so you can resize them later without cropping again. Saving as JPG at quality 85 to 90 keeps photos sharp and light; use PNG for logos or graphics with transparency.
For portraits, cropping with Keep: Top usually frames the face better than the centre. For logos and products, Fit with background avoids cutting off edges.
