1080 x 1080 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize
1080×1080 pixels is the standard Instagram square post. Instagram displays feed images at a maximum width of 1080 px, so a 1080 × 1080 upload is shown pixel for pixel and is not downscaled again. The same size is the recommended square format for Facebook feed posts and ads, LinkedIn and Threads images, and the first slide of most carousels.
A 1080 × 1080 image holds 1,166,400 pixels (1.17 MP). Saved as a JPG at the default 90% quality, a typical photo at this size weighs roughly 210 to 460 KB; logos and flat graphics are usually lighter. In print, 1080 pixels span 3.6 in (9.1 cm) at 300 DPI, or 7.2 in (18.3 cm) at 150 DPI.

How to resize an image to 1080 × 1080 pixels

Turning a non-square photo into 1080 × 1080
Phone and camera photos are usually 4:3 or 3:2, so a square needs a decision. Take a 4000 × 3000 shot: Crop to fill scales it to 1440 × 1080 and trims about 180 px from the left and right edges. Fit with background keeps the whole picture at 1080 × 810 and fills 135 px above and below with white, black, grey, any colour or transparency (PNG, WebP, AVIF). Stretch squeezes it to 1080 × 1080, which distorts faces, so keep it for images that are almost square already. With Fit, the Don't enlarge smaller images option centres a small source at its own size instead of blowing it up.
Tips for 1080 × 1080 images
- Want more screen space in the feed? Use the 4:5 portrait size (1080 × 1350) instead: it takes up more height on phones.
- Instagram re-compresses uploads; start from a 90 to 95% JPG so the second compression does not create visible artefacts.
- For carousels mixing portrait and landscape photos, choose Fit with background so nothing important is cropped.
