How to compress an image to 200 KB online

200 KB is the usual cap for document uploads: certificates, mark sheets, address proofs and caste or income certificates in admission and recruitment portals. It also suits visa photos and product images for online stores. This page is preset to 200 KB; drop your files and each one comes back as a JPG just under 200 KB.

Where a 200 KB limit shows up

  • Scanned certificates, mark sheets and ID documents for admission and job portals
  • Visa photos, for example for forms that accept square photos up to 240 KB
  • Product photos for online stores and marketplaces
  • Real estate and rental listings with several photos per ad

How to compress a photo to 200 KB

  1. Drop your photos on the upload box, click to choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. The target is already set to 200 KB.
  2. For a visa photo with a fixed square size, set it under Resize → Exact (for example 600 × 600 px). For documents keep the original size.
  3. Each image is compressed automatically; the file list shows the new size next to the original.
  4. Drag the before/after slider to check the quality. The result line shows the new dimensions, the file size and the JPG quality that was used.
  5. Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) when you compressed several images.

What fits in 200 KB

With 200 KB a photo can keep about 1200 to 1400 px on the long side at high quality, and a square 600 × 600 px visa photo stays nearly identical to the original. A scanned A4 page fits at around 1400 to 1600 px wide when the page is clean, which keeps even small print legible. JPG is the safest format for portals; for your own online shop, WebP at the same 200 KB target gives visibly more detail if your platform accepts it.

Behind the scenes the tool does not guess. If your photo is over 200 KB, it runs a quick search for the highest JPG quality (up to 80%) that still lands under the limit, keeping about 1.5% headroom so the portal's own byte count never tips it over. Only when even 35% quality is too big does it scale the width and height down, step by step, and search again. If you set an exact pixel size under Resize, the dimensions are never changed: the quality may go lower instead, and a warning appears if 200 KB cannot be reached at that size.

Tips for the best result at 200 KB

  • Upload the original photo or scan, not a screenshot of it: screenshots add blur and noise that cost bytes without adding detail.
  • For documents, scan in colour only if the portal asks for it; a clean scan on a white page compresses much better.
  • For product photos, keep a plain background and even light, so the product itself gets the most detail.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a certificate or document scan to 200 KB?

Drop the scan here. The tool lowers the JPG quality only as much as needed and scales the page down only if it has to, so the text stays readable.

What size can a 200 KB photo be?

Usually around 1200 to 1400 px on the long side at high quality. A square 600 × 600 px photo fits with room to spare.

Is JPG or WebP better at 200 KB?

WebP gives more detail at the same size, but government and visa portals usually accept only JPG. Use JPG for forms and WebP for your own website or shop.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs entirely in your browser, so your images never leave your device. Camera and location data (EXIF) are also removed from the result.

Which image formats can I compress?

The file picker accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP; iPhone HEIC and TIFF files can be dragged onto the page. The 200 KB result is a JPG by default; you can switch to WebP or PNG under Format.
