How to compress an image to 20 KB online

20 KB is the number that appears most often in Indian exam and recruitment notifications: signatures typically have to be 10 to 20 KB, and many photo slots start or end at 20 KB. This page is preset to that limit. Drop your passport-size photo or signature and you get a JPG just under 20 KB, at the highest quality that fits.

Where a 20 KB limit shows up

  • Signatures for SSC, IBPS, RRB and state recruitment forms (often 10 to 20 KB)
  • Passport-size photos for admission, scholarship and admit-card portals with a 20 KB cap
  • Photos with fixed dimensions such as 200 × 230 px for bank exam applications
  • Compact ID photos for employee and student databases

How to compress a photo to 20 KB

  1. Drop your photos on the upload box, click to choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. The target is already set to 20 KB.
  2. Many forms fix both the file size and the pixel size, for example 200 × 230 px for the photo and 140 × 60 px for the signature. Open Resize, choose Exact and type the numbers; the size stays exact while the tool fits 20 KB.
  3. Each image is compressed automatically; the file list shows the new size next to the original.
  4. Drag the before/after slider to check the quality. The result line shows the new dimensions, the file size and the JPG quality that was used.
  5. Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) when you compressed several images.

What fits in 20 KB

A 200 × 230 px photo fits in 20 KB at high JPG quality, usually 70 to 80%, so it looks clean. You can even go to around 300 × 400 px before the face starts to lose detail. A 140 × 60 px signature is only a few kilobytes, which brings up the opposite problem: some forms reject files below 10 KB. In that case enlarge the pixel size under Resize → Exact (for example 280 × 120 px) and run it again. Keep JPG as the output; exam portals almost always accept only JPG/JPEG.

Behind the scenes the tool does not guess. If your photo is over 20 KB, it runs a quick search for the highest JPG quality (up to 80%) that still lands under the limit, keeping about 1.5% headroom so the portal's own byte count never tips it over. Only when even 35% quality is too big does it scale the width and height down, step by step, and search again. If you set an exact pixel size under Resize, the dimensions are never changed: the quality may go lower instead, and a warning appears if 20 KB cannot be reached at that size.

Tips for the best result at 20 KB

  • Use a recent photo with a plain white or light background; flat backgrounds leave more of the 20 KB for the face.
  • Photograph the signature in daylight on white paper, then crop so the ink fills most of the frame.
  • Name your files clearly (photo.jpg, sign.jpg) with the file name pattern under More options, so you upload the right one to the right slot.

Private, free and unlimited

Everything runs in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded, camera and location data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Need a proper passport photo first? Create one with the passport photo maker, set any other dimension with the custom image resizer, or use compress to 50 KB when the photo slot allows 20 to 50 KB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce my photo size to 20 KB for an exam form?

Drop the photo here; the target is already 20 KB. If the notification gives pixel dimensions, enter them under Resize → Exact first. Then download the JPG and upload it to the form.

The form says my 20 KB photo is too large. What now?

The portal probably counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. Set the target size to 19 KB under Compression and download again; the file will then be accepted by either counting method.

My signature is only 5 KB but the form wants 10 to 20 KB. How do I increase it?

Compression can only make files smaller. Increase the pixel size under Resize → Exact (for example 280 × 120 px) so the JPG naturally grows into the 10 to 20 KB range.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs entirely in your browser, so your images never leave your device. Camera and location data (EXIF) are also removed from the result.

Which image formats can I compress?

The file picker accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP; iPhone HEIC and TIFF files can be dragged onto the page. The 20 KB result is a JPG by default; you can switch to WebP or PNG under Format.
