How to optimize images as WebP online

WebP is the everyday format of the fast web: at a similar look it is usually 25 to 35% smaller than JPG, it keeps transparency like PNG, and every current browser displays it. The WebP Optimizer takes whatever you have, whether camera JPGs, PNG screenshots, old BMPs or the first frame of a GIF, and writes a WebP at quality 80, a setting that stays clean on photos while cutting the file size substantially.

It also works the other way round: WebP files you already have, perhaps exported at quality 95 by a design tool or downloaded from a site, are re-encoded at the chosen quality, which often halves them again. Dimensions are kept unless you open the resize section, and a target size mode finds the highest quality that fits under a limit in kilobytes.

How to use the WebP Optimizer

  1. Drop your images onto the upload area, click it to choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. This page accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files, many at once and up to 80 MB each.
  2. Keep quality 80 for general web images, go to 85 to 90 for detailed product photos or screenshots with small text, and to 65 to 75 for thumbnails and background images.
  3. For a fixed budget click Target size and enter a value such as 150 KB; to make large photos lighter still, open Resize and choose Max with a width such as 1600 or 1920 pixels.
  4. Check the result with the before/after slider: drag the divider across the preview and read the new dimensions, file size, quality and percentage saved underneath. Any change to the settings re-processes every image automatically.
  5. Download a single image, or use Download all (ZIP) for the whole batch. Under More options you can also set a DPI value and a file-name pattern with {name}, {w} and {h}.

When WebP is the right choice

  • Oversized WebP downloads. A WebP is not automatically small; files saved at maximum quality can be recompressed here with a clear before/after check.
  • Where WebP is refused. Some email clients, print services and older apps still want JPG; keep the originals or convert back with WebP to JPG.

The browser does the encoding. If a browser cannot write WebP, the button stays off and the result falls back to JPG, or PNG for transparent images, so check the file extension in the result list.

Private, free and fast

The whole job runs in your browser: images are decoded, resized and re-encoded on your own device, so nothing is uploaded to a server. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?

Typically 25 to 35% at a similar visual quality, sometimes more for images with large flat areas. The badge under each result shows the exact saving.

Can I compress a WebP file that is already WebP?

Yes. Existing WebP files are decoded and re-encoded at the quality you choose, which helps a lot when the original was exported at a very high setting.

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent PNG and GIF areas stay transparent in the WebP, including soft edges and shadows.

Are animated GIFs converted to animated WebP?

No. The browser decodes only the first frame of a GIF, so the result is a still WebP image.

Which quality should I use for WebP?

80 is a good default for photos. Use 85 to 90 when text or fine detail must stay crisp, and 100 if you need lossless output, which the WebP lossless page is set up for.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The images are processed locally in your browser and never leave your device. Closing the tab discards them.
