What is a WebP file?

WebP is Google's modern web image format, designed to replace both JPG and PNG on websites. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari (14 and later) all display WebP. Why choose JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format: every browser, phone, camera, printer, email client and editing app opens it. JPG is the safe choice for photos you upload to forms, marketplaces, email attachments or older software. JPG uses lossy compression that throws away fine detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photographs small. JPG has no transparency channel, so any transparent area has to be filled with a solid colour.

What changes when you convert WebP to JPG

JPG cannot store transparency, so any transparent or semi-transparent pixels in the WebP are placed on a solid background colour. White is the default, and you can choose black, light grey or any colour from the picker, which is handy for logos that must match a page or slide. The picture itself is re-encoded at 90% quality by default, a level where differences are very hard to see; the JPG is usually somewhat larger than the WebP because WebP compresses more efficiently. If the WebP is animated, only the first frame is converted.

How to convert WebP to JPG

Tips for the best result

• A transparent logo usually looks best on white; for dark slides or designs choose black or the exact colour of your layout.
• If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead with the WebP to PNG converter.
• Need the JPG under a size limit for an upload form? Switch to Target size, or shrink it afterwards with the JPG compressor.
• Location and camera details (EXIF) are removed from every converted file, so the results are safe to post publicly.
