How to convert JPG to PNG online
Turn JPG and JPEG images into PNG files in a few seconds. A PNG copy is useful when a website or program asks for PNG, when you want to edit an image repeatedly without adding new compression artefacts, or when you work with screenshots and graphics that contain text.
What is a JPG file?
JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format: every browser, phone, camera, printer, email client and editing app opens it. JPG is the safe choice for photos you upload to forms, marketplaces, email attachments or older software. JPG uses lossy compression that throws away fine detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photographs small. JPG has no transparency channel, so any transparent area has to be filled with a solid colour.
Why choose PNG?
PNG is a lossless format: pixels are stored exactly, so text, lines and flat colours stay razor-sharp. PNG files of photographs are large, often three to ten times bigger than a good JPG of the same picture. Every browser, operating system and image editor reads PNG, so it is a safe exchange format. A PNG does not lose quality when it is saved again, which makes it a good working copy for editing.
What changes when you convert JPG to PNG
Converting to PNG stops further quality loss but cannot undo the compression already in the JPG: artefacts that exist in the original stay visible. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is an opaque image with the same background as before; making the background transparent requires removing it, for example with the background remover. For a true pixel-perfect copy set the quality to 100%. The default 90% uses smart palette compression with 256 colours, which keeps files small for graphics and screenshots but may show banding in smooth photographic gradients. Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPG.
How to convert JPG to PNG
- Drop your JPG files onto the upload area, click to browse, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. You can add many files at once, up to 80 MB each.
- In Convert to, PNG is already selected; you can switch between JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF at any time and the preview updates instantly.
- Set the Quality: 100% writes a lossless PNG with every pixel kept, while lower values (the default is 90%) apply smart palette compression with 256 colours or fewer, which keeps transparency and makes the file smaller.
- If needed, open Resize (exact size, maximum size or percentage) and More options for a DPI value and a file-name pattern.
- Compare the original and the result with the before/after slider, then download each file or click Download all (ZIP).
Tips for the best result
- Converting a photo? Move the quality slider to 100% for a lossless PNG and compare with the before/after slider.
- For screenshots, diagrams and logos saved as JPG, the default palette setting usually produces a compact, clean PNG.
- Need a smaller file for sharing afterwards? Use the PNG compressor, or convert back with PNG to JPG.
- Use the file-name pattern under More options, for example {name}-web, to keep converted copies apart from your originals.
Private, free and fast
The conversion runs entirely on your device: your browser reads the JPG images, draws them on a canvas and encodes the PNG files locally. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so private photos and client work stay on your computer. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and settings changes are applied live to every file in the list.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the image without adding new losses, but detail and artefacts already in the JPG stay as they are.
Will my JPG get a transparent background as a PNG?
No. A JPG contains no transparency, so the PNG keeps the original background. Remove the background with a dedicated tool if you need transparency.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless and compresses photos far less efficiently than JPG, so a PNG photo is often several times bigger.
What quality setting should I use?
100% for photos and anything you will edit; the default palette compression works well for screenshots, icons and flat graphics.
Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens in your browser on your own device, so your images never leave your computer. EXIF location and camera data are also removed from the results.
Can I convert several JPG files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like (up to 80 MB each); they are all converted with the same settings and you can download them one by one or together as a ZIP file.
