How to convert an image to another format

Different places want different image formats: a form asks for JPG, a designer needs PNG with transparency, your website is faster with WebP or AVIF. The Image Format Converter turns almost any image into the format you need, directly in your browser and without installing software.

It reads the formats you are likely to have, including JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, multi-page TIFF, iPhone HEIC photos, SVG graphics and ICO icons, and writes JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. JPG is preselected because it opens everywhere; transparent areas are then filled with a background colour you choose, while PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency. Quality, size and file names can be set for the whole batch.

How to use the Image Format Converter

  1. Drop your images onto the upload area, click it to choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. This page accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, HEIC, SVG and ICO files, many at once and up to 80 MB each.
  2. Choose the target format under Convert to: JPG for maximum compatibility, PNG for lossless graphics, WebP for smaller web images, AVIF for the smallest files (needs Chrome or Edge).
  3. When converting to JPG, pick the Background colour for transparent areas; for the other formats transparency is kept automatically.
  4. Check the result with the before/after slider: drag the divider across the preview and read the new dimensions, file size, quality and percentage saved underneath. Any change to the settings re-processes every image automatically.
  5. Download a single image, or use Download all (ZIP) for the whole batch. Under More options you can also set a DPI value and a file-name pattern with {name}, {w} and {h}.

Common conversions

  • iPhone photos. HEIC images become JPG that open on Windows, Android and every website; see also HEIC to JPG.
  • Web images. JPG and PNG become lighter WebP or AVIF; for whole folders the bulk image converter uses the same engine.
  • Graphics for documents. SVG logos and ICO icons become PNG that work in Word, slides and design tools.
  • Old formats. BMP and TIFF scans become compact JPG or PNG for sharing and uploading.

Quick format guide

JPG: photos, smallest widely compatible files, no transparency. PNG: lossless graphics, screenshots and transparency, larger for photos. WebP: modern web format, smaller than JPG and PNG, with transparency. AVIF: newest and smallest for photos, slower to encode and not yet accepted everywhere. If you are unsure, convert to JPG for sharing and to WebP for websites.

Animated GIFs and WebPs are converted from their first frame only, and AVIF output depends on your browser's encoder; other formats behave the same in all current browsers.

Private, free and fast

The whole job runs in your browser: images are decoded, resized and re-encoded on your own device, so nothing is uploaded to a server. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result.

Frequently asked questions

Which image formats can I convert?

Input can be JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, HEIC, SVG or ICO; output is JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF.

Which format should I choose?

JPG for photos that must open everywhere, PNG for graphics and transparency, WebP for smaller web images, AVIF for the smallest modern files.

Does conversion keep transparency?

PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like; all are converted with the same settings and can be downloaded as a ZIP.

Why is AVIF not available?

Creating AVIF needs a browser with an AVIF encoder, currently Chrome or Edge. Other browsers can still convert to JPG, PNG and WebP.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The images are processed locally in your browser and never leave your device. Closing the tab discards them.
