How to convert PNG to WebP online

Use this tool to turn PNG images into WebP files without losing their transparent background. It is the quickest way to slim down screenshots, illustrations, logos and product cut-outs before they go on a website, while keeping the soft edges that make a PNG look clean on any background.

What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless format: pixels are stored exactly, so text, lines and flat colours stay razor-sharp. PNG files of photographs are large, often three to ten times bigger than a good JPG of the same picture. Every browser, operating system and image editor reads PNG, so it is a safe exchange format. A PNG does not lose quality when it is saved again, which makes it a good working copy for editing.

Why choose WebP?

WebP is Google's modern web image format, designed to replace both JPG and PNG on websites. Some older software, print services, office programs and upload forms still refuse WebP files. WebP is the go-to format for lighter pages and better Core Web Vitals scores. WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, full transparency and animation in a single format.

What changes when you convert PNG to WebP

PNG is lossless and often bloated, while WebP compresses far more efficiently and still supports a full alpha channel. The converter keeps transparency automatically, so a logo on a transparent background stays transparent in the WebP. At the default quality of 90% the output uses lossy WebP compression, which is where the big savings come from: photos saved as PNG frequently shrink by 70 to 90%, flat graphics by less, because PNG already handles them well. Dimensions stay the same unless you resize.

How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Drop your PNG files onto the upload area, click to browse, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. You can add many files at once, up to 80 MB each.
  2. In Convert to, WebP is already selected; you can switch between JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF at any time and the preview updates instantly.
  3. Adjust the Quality slider (default 90%) or switch to Target size and enter a limit in KB; the tool then finds the highest quality that fits.
  4. Transparency is kept automatically in the WebP output, so logos and cut-outs stay transparent.
  5. If needed, open Resize (exact size, maximum size or percentage) and More options for a DPI value and a file-name pattern.
  6. Compare the original and the result with the before/after slider, then download each file or click Download all (ZIP).

Tips for the best result

  • For screenshots with small text, keep the quality high (90 to 100%) so letters stay crisp; for photos saved as PNG, 75 to 85% is plenty.
  • Check transparent edges against a dark and a light page background after converting, especially for logos with drop shadows.
  • Use the file-name pattern under More options, for example {name}-web, to keep converted copies apart from your originals.

Private, free and fast

The conversion runs entirely on your device: your browser reads the PNG images, draws them on a canvas and encodes the WebP files locally. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so private photos and client work stay on your computer. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and settings changes are applied live to every file in the list.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep the transparency of my PNG?

Yes. WebP supports a full alpha channel and the converter keeps transparent and semi-transparent pixels as they are.

Why is my WebP only a little smaller than the PNG?

Simple graphics with few colours are already stored efficiently as PNG. The biggest savings come from photos and detailed screenshots.

Is PNG to WebP lossless?

At the default quality the WebP is lossy but visually very close. Raise the quality slider if you need finer detail preserved.

Can I use WebP for my website logo?

Yes, all current browsers display transparent WebP images. Keep the original PNG or SVG for print and other uses.

Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens in your browser on your own device, so your images never leave your computer. EXIF location and camera data are also removed from the results.

Can I convert several PNG files at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like (up to 80 MB each); they are all converted with the same settings and you can download them one by one or together as a ZIP file.
