2560 x 1600 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize

What is 2560×1600 (WQXGA 16:10)?

2560 × 1600 is WQXGA, a 16:10 resolution of 4.1 megapixels. It was the hallmark of 30-inch professional monitors and is the native panel of 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, as well as many high-end Android and Windows tablets. Because it is exactly twice 1280 × 800 in each direction, it is also the natural “@2x” version of a 1280 × 800 design.

At a glance: 2560 × 1600 pixels, aspect ratio 16:10, 4,096,000 pixels in total (about 4.10 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Fit with background mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.

How to resize an image to 2560×1600

  1. Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
  2. Check the framing. The size is preset to 2560 × 1600 with Fit with background: the whole picture stays visible and empty space is filled with white, black, light grey, any colour you pick or transparency (PNG, WebP). Prefer no borders? Switch to Crop to fill and choose which part to keep.
  3. Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 2560×1600 dimensions.
  4. Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
  5. Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-2560x1600 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.

Where 2560×1600 is used

  • Wallpapers for 13-inch Retina MacBooks and 16:10 tablets
  • Retina (@2x) versions of 1280 × 800 screenshots and store images
  • Wallpapers for 30-inch 2560 × 1600 monitors
  • Hi-res 16:10 slides and product shots

Images with a different aspect ratio

The default Fit with background keeps a 16:9 image whole at 2560 px wide, with 80 px bands above and below. For a MacBook wallpaper choose Crop to fill, which fills the display and trims about 10% of the sides; 3:2 camera photos lose only a thin strip. For example, a 4:3 phone photo (4032 × 3024) set to 2560×1600 with Crop to fill loses about 17% of its height (top and bottom edges); with Fit with background it becomes 2133 × 1600 px with bars of about 214 px on the left and right.

Tips for a sharp 2560×1600 result

macOS shows a wallpaper best at the panel's native size, so a 2560 × 1600 file on a 13-inch Retina MacBook is displayed pixel for pixel. Enlarging a 1920-pixel image to this size looks soft on a high-density screen; start from at least 2560 px. PNG suits screenshots, JPG at 90% suits photos (often 1 to 3 MB).

Free, private and made for batches

Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 1920×1200 or 2560×1440; the custom image resizer handles any other width and height, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions

What wallpaper size fits a 13-inch MacBook?

Many 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models have 2560 × 1600 panels, so a 2560 × 1600 image fills the screen at full sharpness. Check your model under About This Mac, as some newer models differ slightly.

What is WQXGA?

WQXGA is 2560 × 1600 pixels in a 16:10 shape, about 4.1 megapixels, used by 30-inch monitors, Retina MacBooks and tablets.

How do I make a 16:9 image fit a 16:10 screen?

Use Crop to fill to cover the screen by trimming the sides, or Fit with background to keep the whole image with bands above and below.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Resizing to 2560×1600 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.

Can I resize many images to 2560×1600 at once?

Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 2560×1600 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.

What aspect ratio is 2560 x 1600?

2560 x 1600 pixels has an aspect ratio of 8:5, so the width is 1.6 times the height.

What is the difference between 2560x1600 and 1600x2560?

They hold the same number of pixels, but 2560x1600 is landscape and 1600x2560 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 2560 × 1600; for 1600 × 2560, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
