How to change the background of a passport or visa photo
The ID Photo Background Changer places your portrait on a plain, solid-colour background and sizes it for common passport and visa formats. Pick a photo standard, pick a background colour, and download a ready-to-use JPG. Everything happens in your browser: your face never leaves your device.
What the tool does
You choose one of eight presets: US Passport and US Visa (600 × 600 px, the 2 × 2 inch square), India Passport, India Visa, UK Passport and Schengen Visa (827 × 1063 px, the 35 × 45 mm portrait format), China Visa (413 × 531 px) or Custom Size. The tool builds a canvas at that size, paints it with your background colour and fits your photo inside it without cropping. Anything that is not covered by the photo, and every transparent pixel of a PNG, becomes the new background.
Background choices are White (the usual passport colour), Light Blue, Light Red, Light Grey (handy for UK and Schengen photos) and Custom, where you can use a colour picker or type any hex code such as #FFFFFF. Under the preview, a short checklist reminds you of the chosen standard's main rules, for example head size for a US passport or visible ears for a China visa.
How to change the background of an ID photo
- If your photo was taken against a busy wall or a coloured backdrop, first cut yourself out with the AI background remover and save the result as a transparent PNG.
- Upload the photo here (click or drag and drop a JPG or PNG).
- Select the photo standard of the country you are applying to.
- Click a background colour, or choose Custom and enter the exact shade you were given.
- Use Split View to compare the original and the result side by side.
- Click Download Photo to save a JPG named after the chosen standard.
Fine-tuning options
- Edge Softness (0 to 10): any value above 0 masks the photo into a round shape. For a normal rectangular ID picture, set it to 0.
- Auto Enhance: adds a gentle contrast boost, which helps flat phone photos look crisper. Switch it off if the result looks too harsh.
- Show Grid: draws rule-of-thirds guides to help you judge head position. The lines are drawn into the image, so turn the grid off before you download.
- Quality (70 to 100%): controls JPG compression. Keep it high for printing; lower it if an online form has a strict file-size limit.
Tips for an accepted photo
Changing the background does not fix everything else a passport office checks. Start from a sharp, evenly lit, front-facing photo with a neutral expression, no glasses glare and nothing covering your face. Frame it so your head fills the right share of the picture before you upload it: the image cropper is useful for this. If a portal asks for a file under a set size, run the downloaded JPG through the compress to 100 KB tool. For printable sheets with several copies and guided head sizing, the passport photo maker is the better starting point.
Official requirements change and vary between embassies, so always check the current rules for your application. Some offices ask for a specific shade of white or light blue, which the Custom colour option lets you match exactly.
Why use this ID photo tool
It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. Because the image is processed with the canvas in your own browser, the photo is not uploaded to a server, which matters for a document that shows your face. The whole job takes less than a minute, so you can prepare a clean background for a visa form without booking a studio.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change the background of my passport photo to white?
Upload the photo, pick your country's standard and click White. If the original background is busy, remove it first with the AI background remover and upload the transparent PNG, so the white shows behind you.
Does this tool remove my existing background automatically?
No. It paints the chosen colour behind your photo and into any transparent areas. For a photo with a cluttered background, cut yourself out with the background remover first, then bring the PNG here.
Which background colours are available?
White, Light Blue, Light Red and Light Grey, plus a Custom option with a colour picker and hex input for any exact shade.
What sizes does it export?
600 × 600 px for US passport and visa, 827 × 1063 px for India, UK and Schengen photos, 413 × 531 px for China visa, and 600 × 600 px for the custom preset. The file is a JPG.
Why is my photo cut into a circle?
The Edge Softness slider masks the photo into a round shape when it is above 0. Set it to 0 to keep a normal rectangular ID photo.
Is it safe to upload my ID photo here?
The photo is processed in your browser and is not sent to a server. Closing the tab clears it.
Will the new background guarantee my photo is accepted?
No tool can guarantee that. Offices also check head size, lighting, expression and sharpness, so compare your photo with the official rules before submitting it.
