How to upscale an image

This free image upscaler lets you upscale an image so a photo, logo or screenshot can be used larger without turning blocky. Pick 2x, 4x or a custom factor up to 8x, choose how the result is finished and download a PNG. It is an easy way to increase image resolution for printing, slides or a sharper profile picture, and it runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

How to upscale an image

  1. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 20 MB.
  2. Choose 2x, 4x or a custom scale from 1x to 8x in half steps. The new size is shown before you start.
  3. Pick an enhancement mode and set noise reduction and sharpening.
  4. Click Upscale Image and compare the result with the before and after slider.
  5. Download the enlarged image as a PNG.

How the upscaler works

Instead of stretching the picture in one jump, the tool enlarges it in several small steps with high quality interpolation and a light sharpening pass between steps. That keeps edges noticeably cleaner than a single resize. Then your settings refine the result. It is not a generative AI upscaler: it does not invent new detail, it makes the existing detail as clean and sharp as possible.

Which factor to choose

  • 2x: the safest choice; it doubles width and height with the cleanest result.
  • 4x: for small images you need much bigger, such as an old 500 px photo for a slide.
  • Up to 8x: for icons, pixel art or tiny screenshots. Expect softer detail at large factors.

The result can be up to 4000 by 4000 pixels. If your chosen factor would go beyond that, pick a smaller one.

Common targets: about 1080 px wide for social posts, 1920 px for full HD slides and desktop wallpapers, 1800 by 1200 px for a 6 by 4 inch photo print and 3000 by 2400 px for an 8 by 10 inch print at 300 dpi. Check the new size shown under the factor before you start, and remember that the output stops at 4000 px on each side.

What people use it for

  • Making a small photo big enough to print.
  • Sharper profile pictures, thumbnails and banners.
  • Enlarging logos and screenshots for slides and documents.
  • Giving old, low resolution photos a cleaner, larger version.

Upscaling and resizing are not the same

Resizing simply changes the pixel count, and a big jump makes edges look jagged and blurry. Upscaling enlarges in steps and then cleans up the result with sharpening and noise reduction, so lines and text stay much crisper. For the best result, start from the largest original you have, upscale once to the size you need rather than several times, and save as PNG so no new compression is added.

Private and free

All processing happens in your browser: the image never leaves your device. There is no sign up and no watermark, and the PNG keeps full quality.

Related tools: cut out the subject first with the background remover, turn the enlarged photo into art with photo to cartoon, or make a crisp avatar with the profile picture maker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I upscale an image for free?

Upload the image, choose 2x, 4x or a custom factor up to 8x, pick an enhancement mode and click Upscale Image. Download the result as a PNG. It is free with no sign up and no watermark.

Does upscaling really improve quality?

It makes the image larger while keeping edges as clean as possible, so it looks much better than a simple stretch. It cannot recover detail that was never in the photo, so very small images will look softer at big factors.

Is this an AI upscaler?

No. It uses step by step high quality interpolation with sharpening and noise reduction. It does not invent new detail, which also means faces and text are not changed.

How do I increase the resolution of an image?

Choose a scale factor: 2x doubles the width and height, 4x makes them four times larger. The new pixel size is shown before you start, up to 4000 by 4000 px.

What is the maximum upscale size?

The result can be up to 4000 by 4000 pixels, and the uploaded image can be up to 20 MB. Pick a smaller factor if the target size goes beyond that.

Which enhancement mode should I choose?

Balanced suits most photos. Use Sharp for text, logos and screenshots, Detail to bring out textures, and Smooth for noisy or compressed pictures.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The image is enlarged in your browser and never leaves your device.
