600 x 600 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize
600×600 pixels is the minimum size for a digital US passport photo: the State Department accepts square images from 600 × 600 up to 1200 × 1200 pixels, and many visa and ID portals copy that rule. It is also the default width of WooCommerce's single-product image and a comfortable size for profile pictures, newsletters and square product shots on most websites.
A 600 × 600 image holds 360,000 pixels (0.36 MP). Saved as a JPG at the default 90% quality, a typical photo at this size weighs roughly 65 to 140 KB; logos and flat graphics are usually lighter. In print, 600 pixels span 2 in (5.1 cm) at 300 DPI, or 4 in (10.2 cm) at 150 DPI.
What 600 × 600 pixels is used for
- US passport and visa photos: meets the 600 × 600 px minimum for digital passport photos.
- Online ID applications: government and university portals that ask for a square 600 px photo.
- Product images: matches WooCommerce's default 600 px single-product image.
- Email newsletters: square images in 600 px wide email templates.
How to resize an image to 600 × 600 pixels
- Drop your images on the box, click to choose them, or paste one with Ctrl+V (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG; up to 80 MB each).
- The size is preset to 600 × 600 px with Crop to fill; choose which part to keep (center, top, bottom, left or right) or switch to Fit with background or Stretch.
- Pick the format: Original, JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF (in browsers that can encode it), and set the quality, or switch to Target size and enter a limit in KB.
- Drag the before/after slider on the preview; every change is re-rendered live.
- Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) for several files, named like photo-600x600.jpg.
Turning a non-square photo into 600 × 600
Phone and camera photos are usually 4:3 or 3:2, so a square needs a decision. Take a 4000 × 3000 shot: Crop to fill scales it to 800 × 600 and trims about 100 px from the left and right edges. Fit with background keeps the whole picture at 600 × 450 and fills 75 px above and below with white, black, grey, any colour or transparency (PNG, WebP, AVIF). Stretch squeezes it to 600 × 600, which distorts faces, so keep it for images that are almost square already. With Fit, the Don't enlarge smaller images option centres a small source at its own size instead of blowing it up.
Tips for 600 × 600 images
- Passport rules also cover the head size (about 50 to 69% of the image height for the US) and a plain white background: resizing alone does not make a photo compliant, so frame it correctly first.
- Use Crop to fill with the Top or Center position for ID photos; never use Stretch, which distorts the face.
- Many ID portals also cap the file at 240 KB; use Target size if your file is larger.
Everything runs in your browser: images are never uploaded, and there is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. Under More options you can write a DPI value into JPG and PNG files or change the file-name pattern, and location and camera data (EXIF) are always removed. Making a 600 × 600 picture on a phone
This page works in the browser on Android phones and iPhones, so there is no app to install. Tap the box, pick a photo from your gallery, choose Top as the crop position for a portrait so the head stays in the frame, then tap Download. The file is saved where your browser keeps downloads (on an iPhone that is the Downloads folder in the Files app), named like photo-600x600.jpg.

Frequently asked questions
Is 600x600 the right size for a US passport photo?
Yes, digital US passport photos must be square, between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, in JPG format. The photo must also meet the head-size and background rules.
What else is a 600x600 image used for?
Product photos (WooCommerce's default single-product width), profile pictures, newsletter images and forms that ask for a 600 px square.
How many KB is a 600x600 photo?
Roughly 65 to 140 KB as a JPG at 90% quality: under the 240 KB limit most passport portals use.
How do I resize a photo to 600x600 without cropping it?
Choose Fit with background. The whole photo is scaled to fit inside 600 × 600 px and the empty space is filled with a colour you choose, or left transparent when you save as PNG, WebP or AVIF.
What size is 600x600 pixels in inches or cm?
At 300 DPI it prints at 2 × 2 in (5.1 × 5.1 cm); at 150 DPI at 4 × 4 in (10.2 cm). On screen only pixels count; DPI matters for printing and can be set under More options.
Can I resize multiple images to 600x600 at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like (they all get the same settings) then download them one by one or together as a ZIP file.
What aspect ratio is 600 x 600?
600 x 600 is a square, so its aspect ratio is 1:1: the width and the height are the same.
How do I make a picture 600x600 pixels on my phone?
Open this page in your phone's browser, tap the upload box and choose the photo. The size is already set to 600 × 600, so you only pick the crop position (Top keeps a face in the frame) and tap Download. Nothing is uploaded: the resizing happens on the phone itself.
Is 600x600 high resolution?
Not by camera standards: 600 × 600 is 0.36 megapixels, while a phone photo usually has 12 megapixels or more. It looks sharp on screens that show the image at up to 600 pixels wide, and prints cleanly only up to about 2 in (5 cm) at 300 DPI. For zoomable product photos or large displays, use 1200 × 1200 instead.
