400 x 400 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize
400×400 pixels is the recommended profile-picture size for X (Twitter) and LinkedIn, and a safe choice for most other networks too. Both platforms display the photo much smaller and in a circle, but they use the 400 px original on profile pages and high-resolution screens, so uploading exactly this size keeps your face sharp without the platform re-compressing an oversized file. It is also widely used for company logos on LinkedIn pages and for Slack, Teams and Zoom avatars.
A 400 × 400 image holds 160,000 pixels (0.16 MP). Saved as a JPG at the default 90% quality, a typical photo at this size weighs roughly 30 to 65 KB; logos and flat graphics are usually lighter. In print, 400 pixels span 1.33 in (3.4 cm) at 300 DPI, or 2.67 in (6.8 cm) at 150 DPI.
What 400 × 400 pixels is used for
- X (Twitter) profile photo: 400 × 400 is the recommended upload; it is shown in a circle.
- LinkedIn profile and company logo: the recommended size for personal photos and page logos.
- Work chat avatars: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google accounts.
- Square website images: team pages, testimonials and medium product thumbnails.
How to resize an image to 400 × 400 pixels
- Drop your images on the box, click to choose them, or paste one with Ctrl+V (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG; up to 80 MB each).
- The size is preset to 400 × 400 px with Crop to fill; choose which part to keep (center, top, bottom, left or right) or switch to Fit with background or Stretch.
- Pick the format: Original, JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF (in browsers that can encode it), and set the quality, or switch to Target size and enter a limit in KB.
- Drag the before/after slider on the preview; every change is re-rendered live.
- Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) for several files, named like photo-400x400.jpg.
Turning a non-square photo into 400 × 400
Phone and camera photos are usually 4:3 or 3:2, so a square needs a decision. Take a 4000 × 3000 shot: Crop to fill scales it to 533 × 400 and trims about 67 px from the left and right edges. Fit with background keeps the whole picture at 400 × 300 and fills 50 px above and below with white, black, grey, any colour or transparency (PNG, WebP, AVIF). Stretch squeezes it to 400 × 400, which distorts faces, so keep it for images that are almost square already. With Fit, the Don't enlarge smaller images option centres a small source at its own size instead of blowing it up.
Tips for 400 × 400 images
- Profile photos are cropped to a circle: keep your face centred with some space around the head, because the four corners disappear.
- Use the Top position when cropping a portrait shot so the chin-to-hair area stays in the frame.
- Logos with transparent backgrounds: save as PNG, or pick a solid background colour with Fit with background so the logo does not touch the circle's edge.
Everything runs in your browser: images are never uploaded, and there is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. Under More options you can write a DPI value into JPG and PNG files or change the file-name pattern, and location and camera data (EXIF) are always removed. Frequently asked questions
What size should a Twitter / X profile picture be?
X recommends 400 × 400 pixels, as JPG or PNG. It is displayed in a circle, so keep important details away from the corners.
What is the LinkedIn profile photo size?
LinkedIn recommends 400 × 400 pixels for profile photos (larger is accepted, up to 8 MB). The same size works for company page logos.
How many KB is a 400x400 picture?
About 30 to 65 KB as a JPG at 90% quality: far below the upload limits of X (2 MB) and LinkedIn (8 MB).
How do I resize a photo to 400x400 without cropping it?
Choose Fit with background. The whole photo is scaled to fit inside 400 × 400 px and the empty space is filled with a colour you choose, or left transparent when you save as PNG, WebP or AVIF.
What size is 400x400 pixels in inches or cm?
At 300 DPI it prints at 1.33 × 1.33 in (3.4 × 3.4 cm); at 150 DPI at 2.67 × 2.67 in (6.8 cm). On screen only pixels count; DPI matters for printing and can be set under More options.
Can I resize multiple images to 400x400 at once?
Yes. Add as many images as you like (they all get the same settings) then download them one by one or together as a ZIP file.
What aspect ratio is 400 x 400?
400 x 400 is a square, so its aspect ratio is 1:1: the width and the height are the same.
