3840 x 2160 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize

What is 3840×2160 (4K UHD)?

3840 × 2160 is 4K UHD (Ultra HD, 2160p): exactly twice Full HD in each direction, so four times the pixels, about 8.3 megapixels. It is the resolution of 4K TVs, 27- to 32-inch 4K monitors and YouTube's 2160p. It is slightly narrower than cinema DCI 4K, which is 4096 × 2160.

At a glance: 3840 × 2160 pixels, aspect ratio 16:9, 8,294,400 pixels in total (about 8.29 megapixels). The tool opens with exactly this size preset and the Crop to fill mode selected, so most images need no extra settings.

How to resize an image to 3840×2160

  1. Add your images. Drop them on the upload area, click to choose files or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted, many files at once (up to 80 MB each).
  2. Check the framing. The size is preset to 3840 × 2160 with Crop to fill: the frame is filled edge to edge and whatever does not fit is trimmed. Use Keep (center, top, bottom, left or right) to choose which part survives, or switch to Fit with background or Stretch.
  3. Pick format and quality. Keep the original format or convert to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. The quality slider starts at 90%; alternatively set a Target size in KB and the tool lowers only the quality, never the 3840×2160 dimensions.
  4. Compare. Drag the before/after slider across the preview to check sharpness and framing.
  5. Download. Save each image, or click Download all (ZIP) for a batch. Files are named name-3840x2160 automatically; the pattern and a DPI value can be changed under More options.

Where 3840×2160 is used

  • 4K wallpapers for monitors, laptops and smart TVs
  • Stills, title cards and thumbnails inside 2160p video projects
  • Images for 4K digital signage and presentations on big screens
  • Screen-sized exports of photos for viewing on a 4K TV

Images with a different aspect ratio

The page starts in Crop to fill. A 16:9 source fills 3840 × 2160 exactly; a 12-megapixel 4:3 phone photo is scaled to 3840 px wide and loses a quarter of its height, which you steer with Keep. For portraits or when nothing may be cut, choose Fit with background. For example, a 4:3 phone photo (4032 × 3024) set to 3840×2160 with Crop to fill loses about 25% of its height (top and bottom edges); with Fit with background it becomes 2880 × 2160 px with bars of about 480 px on the left and right.

Tips for a sharp 3840×2160 result

4K is where upscaling shows: a 1920 × 1080 picture has to be doubled and will look soft on a big screen, so tick Don't enlarge smaller images if you batch mixed sources. 4K files are heavy: a PNG photo can easily exceed 15 MB, while JPG at 85 to 90% or WebP keeps it to a few MB. AVIF is smaller still where Chrome or Edge can create it.

Free, private and made for batches

Everything happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, location and camera data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. Need a neighbouring size? Try 2560×1440 or 1920×1080; the 16:9 image resizer keeps any picture in the same proportions at a size you choose, and the image compressor shrinks the file further if a website or email still rejects it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3840x2160 real 4K?

It is 4K UHD, the consumer 4K used by TVs, monitors and YouTube. Cinema DCI 4K is 4096 × 2160, slightly wider.

Can I convert a 1080p image to 4K?

You can resize it to 3840 × 2160, but that doubles every pixel, so the image won't gain real detail and will look softer. Start from a larger original when possible.

What format is best for 4K wallpapers?

JPG at 85 to 90% or WebP gives excellent quality at a few MB. PNG is lossless but a 4K photo can easily be well over 10 MB.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Resizing to 3840×2160 happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Location and camera data (EXIF) are also removed from the output.

Can I resize many images to 3840×2160 at once?

Yes. Add as many images as you like: each one is resized to 3840×2160 with the same settings, and Download all saves them together as a ZIP file.

What aspect ratio is 3840 x 2160?

3840 x 2160 pixels has an aspect ratio of 16:9, so the width is 1.78 times the height.

What is the difference between 3840x2160 and 2160x3840?

They hold the same number of pixels, but 3840x2160 is landscape and 2160x3840 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 3840 × 2160; for 2160 × 3840, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
