How to straighten a photo online in seconds
A horizon that leans by two degrees is enough to make a good photo feel careless. The Photo Straightener levels tilted pictures directly in your browser. It can estimate the tilt for you from the strongest lines in the image, let you trace the horizon with the mouse, or rotate by hand with a precision of a hundredth of a degree. Composition grids help you check the result, and auto crop removes the empty corners that rotation leaves behind.
How to straighten a photo online
- Upload a photo (any common image format the browser can open, up to 10 MB).
- Choose a mode: Auto and click Auto Detect, Horizon to click and drag a line along something that should be level, or Manual / Grid Align to rotate with the slider.
- Refine the angle: the main slider covers -45° to +45° in 0.1° steps, the Fine Adjust slider adds -5° to +5° in 0.01° steps, and the ±0.5° and ±1° buttons nudge the image.
- Keep Auto Crop on to trim the blank corners, or turn it off and fill them with black, white, a blurred copy of the photo or a mirrored copy.
- Click Apply Straightening, compare with the original using the Original/Result toggle, and download the PNG.
Straightening modes and guides
- Auto detection runs an edge analysis on the image and picks the most common line angle within ±45°. It works best on photos with clear horizontals or verticals such as seascapes, buildings, shelves or documents.
- Horizon line is the fastest precise method: drag along the sea, a rooftop or a table edge and the tool reads the angle from your line, shown live in degrees.
- Grid overlay offers rule of thirds, golden ratio, diagonals, a centre cross and a Fibonacci spiral, with your own grid colour and 10 to 100% opacity.
- Quick rotation buttons for -90°, +90° and 180° fix pictures that were imported sideways or upside down.
- A basic perspective mode lets you move four corner points for mild keystone distortion; for most photos the rotation modes give cleaner results.
Tips for a natural result
Level the horizon, not the subject: on a beach or lake shot the waterline must be flat even if the people in the frame are leaning. With architecture, align a vertical edge in the centre of the frame rather than one near the border, where lens distortion bends lines. Remember that every degree of rotation costs a little of the frame when auto crop is on, so leave some breathing room around important details. If you need a specific output size afterwards, run the level photo through the image cropper or the aspect ratio fixer. For flips and exact 90° turns without levelling, the rotate and flip tool is quicker.
Why use this photo straightener
Everything happens on your own device: the picture is read by the browser, rotated on a canvas and saved as a PNG without being uploaded to a server. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you straighten. Because the PNG output is lossless, you do not add compression artefacts on top of the ones already in your JPG. Edge smoothing and antialiasing are enabled by default so rotated lines stay clean instead of jagged.

Frequently asked questions
How do I straighten a crooked photo online?
Upload the photo, choose Horizon mode and drag a line along something that should be level, or click Auto Detect. Fine-tune the angle with the sliders, click Apply Straightening and download the PNG.
Does straightening a photo crop it?
Rotating an image creates empty corners. With Auto Crop on (the default) the tool trims them, so you lose a little around the edges. Turn Auto Crop off to keep the full frame and fill the corners with black, white, blur or a mirrored copy.
How accurate is the automatic straightening?
Auto Detect finds the dominant line angle from the edges in the picture. It is reliable on photos with clear horizontal or vertical lines; on busy scenes use the horizon line or manual slider instead.
Can I rotate a sideways photo by 90 degrees?
Yes. In Manual or Grid Align mode use the -90°, +90° and 180° buttons, then level the photo with the slider if it is also slightly tilted.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The image is processed with the canvas API inside your browser and never leaves your device.
What format is the straightened image saved in?
The result is downloaded as a PNG file, which is lossless, so no extra compression is added. You can convert it to JPG or WebP afterwards if you need a smaller file.
