How to split a photo into multiple parts online

Photo Splitter cuts one picture into several separate image files. The classic use is an Instagram grid, where one large photo is spread across three, six or nine posts so your profile shows it as a single picture, but it also slices panoramas into carousel slides, prints large posters on several sheets and turns photos into jigsaw-style pieces. The image is split in your browser, so it is never uploaded.

How to split an image into a grid

  1. Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP or other common image (up to 20 MB).
  2. Choose a split mode. Grid is the everyday choice: set any number of rows and columns from 1 to 20. Instagram offers ready layouts (3×3 grid, 2×2 grid, 3×1 panorama, 1×3 story strip and a 10-slide carousel), and Custom lets you click and drag on the photo to draw your own horizontal and vertical cut lines.
  3. Open Options if you need a border around every tile (0 to 20 px, any colour) or numbers printed on each piece in a corner or the centre, with your own text and background colours.
  4. Pick the output format, PNG, JPG or WebP, and click Split Image.
  5. Download everything with All as ZIP, click individual tiles to select and download only those, or save a single piece.

Pieces are numbered from the top-left, row by row (piece-1, piece-2 and so on), so you always know where each tile belongs.

More creative split modes

  • Puzzle: cuts the photo into jigsaw pieces with tabs, from 2×2 to 10×10, for printable puzzles or games.
  • Shapes: clips each cell into a circle, hexagon, triangle, star, heart or diamond, with adjustable rows and columns.
  • Pattern, Diagonal and Spiral: checkerboard, brick, honeycomb, zigzag or random patterns, diagonal slices, or concentric rings for decorative layouts.

Tips for a clean Instagram grid

  • Get the ratio right first. The splitter divides the image exactly as it is, so the tile shape follows the photo shape. For square tiles in a 3×3 grid, start from a square image; for three panorama slides, use a 3:1 image. Prepare it with the image cropper or the aspect ratio fixer.
  • Post in reverse order. Instagram puts the newest post at the top left, so upload the bottom-right tile (the highest number) first and piece 1 last.
  • Keep faces and text off the cut lines, and check that each tile still looks good on its own, because followers see single posts in their feed before they visit your profile.
  • Profile grids may show a slightly cropped preview, so leave a little breathing room at the edges of each tile.
  • Want the opposite, several photos combined into one? Use Photo Stitch.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a photo into 9 parts for Instagram?

Upload a square image, choose Grid with 3 rows and 3 columns (or the Instagram 3×3 layout) and click Split Image. Download the ZIP and post the tiles from piece 9 down to piece 1.

In what order should I post grid tiles on Instagram?

Post in reverse: the last piece (bottom right) first and piece 1 (top left) last, because Instagram shows the newest post at the top left of your profile.

Why are my tiles not square?

The tool divides the image exactly as it is, so tile proportions follow the original. Crop the photo to 1:1 for a 3×3 grid, or 3:1 for three panorama slides, before splitting.

Can I split an image into a custom number of pieces?

Yes. Grid mode accepts any combination of 1 to 20 rows and columns, and Custom mode lets you draw your own horizontal and vertical cut lines.

Can I make a jigsaw puzzle from a photo?

Yes. Puzzle mode cuts the image into interlocking jigsaw-shaped pieces from 2×2 up to 10×10, which you can download and print.

Does splitting reduce the image quality?

No resizing is applied: each tile keeps the original pixels. Choose PNG for lossless tiles, or JPG or WebP for smaller files.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The image is split in your browser and the tiles are created on your device, so nothing is sent to a server.
