How to make a meme online
This meme generator turns a joke into a finished image in under a minute. Start from one of 31 meme layouts or from your own photo, screenshot or GIF, type the captions, place them where you want and download the result. It is a free meme maker with no account, no watermark and nothing to install, and everything happens in your browser.
How to make a meme in 4 steps
- Pick a layout in the template gallery, or click Upload image to start from your own photo or GIF.
- Type your captions in the Text tab. Drag each caption on the meme to place it, and use the corner and round handles to resize or rotate it.
- Add emoji, an image overlay, a drawing or a blur box if the joke needs it, and set the crop shape in the Canvas tab.
- Choose PNG, JPG or WebP and press Download, or Download GIF for an animated meme. You can also copy or share it.
Make a meme with your own image
Click Upload image, drag a file onto the page or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. A single photo becomes a classic meme with TOP TEXT and BOTTOM TEXT ready to edit, and the canvas takes the shape of your picture so nothing is squashed. Layouts with several panels have a slot for each photo: tap a slot to fill it, drag the photo to frame it and use zoom, fill or fit, rotate and flip until it looks right.
Text that goes anywhere
- Add as many captions as you need. Drag them, resize them with the corner handles and rotate them with the round handle.
- Auto-fit shrinks long captions so they always fit their box. Turn it off to set an exact size.
- Six one-click styles: Classic (white Impact with a black outline), Caption, Subtitle, White box, Dark box and Comic.
- Nine fonts, any fill colour, outline width and colour, shadow, a background box, left, centre or right alignment, ALL CAPS, bold and italic.
- Captions in Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Russian and other scripts are drawn with the right direction and wrap correctly.
Meme templates and layouts
The template gallery is searchable and split into Classic, Caption, Multi panel, Comparison, Reaction and Charts. You will find the popular formats people search for, such as approve/reject (the Drake format), expanding brain, two buttons, distracted, change my mind, this is fine and the bell curve. These layouts are drawn in your browser with emoji in place of the original photos, so the page loads fast and you can drop your own picture into any slot. Each layout starts with sample captions you simply overwrite.
GIF memes and extras
- Animated GIF memes: upload a GIF, add a caption and press Download GIF. The animation keeps its timing.
- Stickers: 60 emoji plus image overlays for logos, faces or reaction pictures.
- Draw and hide: a brush for circles and arrows, and blur or pixelate boxes for faces, names and phone numbers.
- Canvas tools: crop shapes (original, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 9:16, 3:2), white caption bars on top or at the bottom, a border, background colour, rotate 90° and mirror.
Download, copy or share
Save the meme as PNG for the sharpest text, JPG or WebP for smaller files (quality from 50 to 100), or GIF when the meme is animated. You can also copy it straight to the clipboard and paste it into a chat, or use Share on phones that support it. There is never a watermark. Undo and redo cover every change, and Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y, Delete, the arrow keys, Ctrl+D and Ctrl+S work as shortcuts. Your last meme is kept in this browser so you can continue later.
Tips for memes people share
- Keep captions short: one line on top, the punchline at the bottom.
- White Impact with a black outline stays readable on light and dark photos. On busy pictures, raise the outline or add a dark box.
- For Instagram use the 1:1 or 4:5 crop shape, for TikTok and Reels the Story 9:16 layout. You can also resize the final file with the 1080×1080 image resizer.
- Need a GIF from several pictures first? Build it with the GIF maker, then caption it here. For styled text on regular photos, try the text overlay tool.
Private by design
Your photos, captions and finished memes never leave your device. The editor runs in your browser, the templates are generated on the spot rather than downloaded, and no file is uploaded to WoowTools. That also makes the meme generator quick on slow connections and usable on any modern phone, tablet or computer.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a meme for free without a watermark?
Pick a layout or upload a picture, type your captions and press Download. WoowTools adds no watermark or logo, there is no account and no daily limit, and the file is created in your browser.
Can I make a meme with my own image?
Yes. Click Upload image, drop a file onto the page or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. Single photo layouts take the shape of your picture and keep it sharp up to 2048 px wide. Multi panel layouts have a slot for each photo.
Can I add text to a GIF?
Yes. Upload an animated GIF and it keeps playing in the editor. Add captions, emoji or a caption bar, then press Download GIF. Up to 200 frames are kept and the GIF is saved at up to 640 px on its longest side so it stays easy to share.
What font do memes use?
Classic memes use Impact in white with a black outline, which is the default style here. If your phone has no Impact, a very similar free font (Anton) is used. You can also switch to Arial, Oswald, Bangers, a marker font, Comic, Times, Courier or your system font.
How do I put a white caption bar on top of a meme?
Choose the Caption on top layout, or open the Canvas tab and click White bar on top. The bar gets dark text in a clean sans-serif style, which is the modern caption format used on X, Reddit and Instagram.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Templates are drawn and photos are processed inside your browser, and the finished meme is created on your device. Your last meme is remembered in this browser only, so you can continue it later.
Which meme templates are included?
31 layouts: classic top and bottom text, caption on top or bottom, Nobody: Me:, POV, story 9:16, demotivational poster, approve/reject, expanding brain, panic calm panic, normal vs fancy, two buttons, distracted, is this a, this is fine, change my mind, hard to swallow pills, 2, 3 and 4 panel grids, comic strips, expectation vs reality, before and after, starter pack, bell curve, Venn diagram and tier list. How do I blur a face or name in a meme?
Open the Draw tab, choose Blur area or Pixelate area and drag a box over the part to hide. You can move and resize the box afterwards and set its strength.
