What is a TIFF file?

TIFF is a flexible, high-quality format used in printing, publishing, scanning and archiving. TIFF can be uncompressed or losslessly compressed and supports high bit depths and several pages in one file. TIFF files are large, often tens of megabytes per scan or photo. Browsers cannot display TIFF, and most websites, messengers and social networks reject it.

Why choose JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format: every browser, phone, camera, printer, email client and editing app opens it. Each time a JPG is edited and saved again a little more quality is lost, so keep an original if you plan further edits. At 80 to 90% quality a JPG photo usually looks identical to the original at a fraction of the size of a PNG or TIFF. JPG is the safe choice for photos you upload to forms, marketplaces, email attachments or older software.

What changes when you convert TIFF to JPG

The tool decodes TIFF with a dedicated decoder that runs in your browser and is loaded only when you add a TIFF. Each page of a multi-page file becomes its own JPG, numbered -p1, -p2 and so on. The JPG is written at 92% quality by default, which keeps scans and photos crisp while typically reducing the size dramatically. Images with a high bit depth are reduced to the standard 8 bits per channel, and any transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default). Files up to 80 MB each are accepted.

How to convert TIFF to JPG

4. Pick the Background colour for transparent areas: white, black, light grey or any colour from the picker.
5. If needed, open Resize (exact size, maximum size or percentage) and More options for a DPI value and a file-name pattern.
6. Compare the original and the result with the before/after slider, then download each file or click Download all (ZIP).

• For text-heavy scans such as contracts or forms, keep the quality at 90% or more so small print stays readable.
