How to use it: Sales Tax Calculator

In the US, sales tax is added at the register, so the shelf price is not what you pay. This calculator adds the tax to any price, or works backwards from a receipt total to the pre-tax price and the tax that was charged.

One-tap rates cover common combined state and local rates: 4%, 5%, 6%, 6.25%, 7%, 7.25%, 8%, 8.875% (New York City) and 9.5%, and you can type the exact rate for your city or county.

How to use it

  1. Choose Add sales tax (shelf price) or Remove sales tax (receipt total).
  2. Enter the price and quantity.
  3. Tap your rate or type the exact combined state and local rate.
  4. Read the tax and total, and copy the breakdown.

How it is calculated

Tax = price × rate ÷ 100, total = price + tax. From a total: pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate/100).

Worked example

A $249.99 TV in a city with 8.875% sales tax costs $22.19 in tax, $272.18 in total. A receipt for $53.75 at 7.5% means a pre-tax price of $50.00 and $3.75 of tax. Five $12 items at 6.25% cost $63.75.

How do I find the price before tax?

It is the state rate plus any county, city and special district taxes. Combined rates commonly range from about 4% to more than 10%.

Which states have no sales tax?

Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax; Alaska allows only local sales taxes.

Both tax consumption, but sales tax is added once at the final sale, while VAT is collected at each stage and usually included in shelf prices.

Is this calculator free and private?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you type are never sent to a server or stored.
