How to use it: Discount Calculator

This discount calculator answers the two questions every shopper has: what will I pay after the discount, and how big is this discount really? Enter the original price and the percentage off to get the sale price and your savings instantly.

Stack an extra discount such as a coupon on top of a sale and the calculator shows the true combined discount: 30% plus 20% is 44%, not 50%. Add sales tax for the price at the till, or switch modes to find the discount percentage from an original and a sale price.

How to use it

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Pick the discount (10% to 70% chips or any value).
  3. Optionally add an extra discount and sales tax.
  4. Or switch to Find the discount % and enter both prices.

How it is calculated

Sale price = price × (1 − discount/100). Stacked discounts multiply: price × (1 − d1/100) × (1 − d2/100). Discount % = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100.

Worked example

A jacket costs $120 with 30% off: you pay $84 and save $36. With an extra 20% coupon the price falls to $67.20: a total discount of 44%, not 50%. With 8% sales tax you pay $72.58 at the register. A $60 item reduced to $45 is 25% off.

Who uses it

  • Shoppers checking Black Friday and seasonal sales
  • Store owners setting sale prices
  • Comparing a percentage discount with a fixed amount off
  • Students practising percentage problems

Tips

  • Two discounts never add up: 50% + 50% is 75% off, not free.
  • Compare deals by the final price, not by the headline percentage.
  • A discount applies before tax in most stores, so the tax is calculated on the sale price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. 25% off $80 is $20, so you pay $60.

How do I calculate 20% off?

Multiply the price by 0.8. A $45 item at 20% off costs $36.

Are two discounts added together?

No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price. 30% then 20% off equals 44% off in total.

How do I find the discount percentage?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. From $50 to $35 is 30% off.

Is tax charged before or after the discount?

Usually after: the tax is calculated on the discounted price. Enter the tax rate to see the final amount.

Is this calculator free and private?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you type are never sent to a server or stored.
