How to use it: VAT Calculator
This VAT calculator turns a net price into a gross price, or splits a VAT-inclusive price back into net and VAT. It is preset to the UK standard rate of 20%, with one-tap rates used across Europe and the Gulf (5%, 7%, 10%, 15%, 19%, 21%, 23% and 25%) and a field for any other rate.
It is handy for invoices, quotes, expense claims and online shopping, and it handles quantities, so you can price several identical items at once and copy the breakdown into a document.
How to use it
- Choose Add VAT (price excluding VAT) or Remove VAT (price including VAT).
- Enter the amount and the quantity.
- Tap a VAT rate or type your own.
- Read net, VAT and gross, and copy the breakdown.
How it is calculated
Add VAT: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100, gross = net + VAT. Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate/100), VAT = gross − net. At 20%, the VAT inside a gross price is gross ÷ 6.
Worked example
A UK freelancer invoices £1,500 plus VAT at 20%: the VAT is £300 and the total £1,800. A receipt for £96 including 20% VAT contains £16 of VAT on a net price of £80. In the UAE, an AED 1,050 price including 5% VAT contains AED 50 of VAT.
Who uses it

Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by (1 + rate/100). At 20%, £100 becomes £120.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by (1 + rate/100). At 20%, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net and £20 VAT.
Why is 20% VAT not 20% of the gross price?
VAT is charged on the net price. Inside a gross price, 20% VAT is one sixth of the total (16.67%).
What VAT rate should I use?
The UK standard rate is 20%, the reduced rate 5%. Most EU countries are between 17% and 27%; Saudi Arabia charges 15% and the UAE 5%.
Is this the same as GST or sales tax?
They are similar consumption taxes. Use the GST calculator for India's CGST/SGST split and the sales tax calculator for US-style taxes added at the till.
Is this calculator free and private?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you type are never sent to a server or stored.
