How to use it: Fraction Calculator

This fraction calculator works with simple fractions and mixed numbers. Enter two fractions, choose +, −, × or ÷ and get the answer in lowest terms, as a mixed number, a decimal and a percentage: with every step shown so you can follow the method.

Two extra modes help with homework: Simplify reduces any fraction by its greatest common divisor, and Decimal to fraction turns values like 0.375 or 0.3333 into exact fractions (3/8, 1/3).

How to use it

  1. Type the first fraction; use the small left box for a whole number to make a mixed number.
  2. Choose +, −, × or ÷.
  3. Type the second fraction.
  4. Read the simplified result, the mixed number, decimal, percentage and the steps.

How it is calculated

a/b + c/d = (a·d + c·b) ÷ (b·d), using the least common denominator; a/b × c/d = (a·c)/(b·d); a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c. Results are reduced by dividing top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

Worked example

1/2 + 1/3: the common denominator is 6, so 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. 2 1/4 × 1 2/3 = 9/4 × 5/3 = 45/12 = 15/4 = 3 3/4. 3/4 ÷ 1/8 = 3/4 × 8/1 = 6. And 0.625 as a fraction is 5/8.

Who uses it

  • Pupils learning to add and simplify fractions
  • Parents checking homework

Tips

  • Always simplify the final answer: teachers usually expect lowest terms.
  • To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal (flip it).
  • Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before multiplying or dividing.

Frequently asked questions

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Find a common denominator, convert both fractions, add the numerators and simplify. 1/4 + 1/6 = 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.

How do you simplify a fraction?

Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. 18/24 ÷ 6 = 3/4.

How do I enter a mixed number?

Put the whole number in the small box to the left and the fraction in the boxes on the right, e.g. 2 and 1/3 for 2 1/3.

How do I convert a decimal to a fraction?

Use the Decimal to fraction mode. 0.75 becomes 3/4, 0.125 becomes 1/8 and repeating decimals like 0.6666 become 2/3.

Can it handle negative fractions?

Yes. Type a minus sign in the numerator or the whole number, e.g. −3/4.

Is this calculator free and private?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you type are never sent to a server or stored.
