How to use it: Grade Calculator
This grade calculator answers the two questions students ask most. Weighted grade mode combines homework, quizzes, projects and exams by their weights into your current class percentage and letter grade.
Final grade needed mode works backwards: enter your current grade, the grade you want and how much the final exam is worth, and it tells you exactly what you need to score on the final, or whether the target is already safe or out of reach.
How to use it
- Choose Weighted grade or Final grade needed.
- For a weighted grade, enter each category's score (%) and weight (%).
- For the final, enter your current grade, the target and the final's weight.
- Read the result and the letter grade.
How it is calculated
Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight. Score needed on the final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal.
Worked example
Homework 92% (20%), quizzes 85% (15%), midterm 78% (25%) and project 88% (15%) give a weighted grade of 85.1% so far, a B. If you have 84% now and the final counts for 30%, you need 104% on it for a 90% A (out of reach) but only 70.7% to keep an 80% B−.
Who uses it
- High-school and college students tracking class grades
- Planning how much to study for a final
- Teachers checking weighted gradebooks
- Parents following their child's progress
Tips
- Use the weights from your syllabus; they do not need to add up to 100 while the term is in progress.
- For points-based grades, convert to a percentage first: earned ÷ possible × 100.
- If the needed score is above 100%, ask about extra credit early.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my weighted grade?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. The calculator does this for any number of rows.
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Use Final grade needed: enter your current grade, 90 as the target and the final's weight. The answer is the minimum final exam score.
What if the weights don't add up to 100?
That is fine during the term: the calculator averages over the weight you have entered so far.
What grade is 85%?
On the common US scale, 83 to 86% is a B; 87 to 89% is a B+ and 90%+ an A−.
How do I convert points to a percentage?
Divide the points earned by the points possible and multiply by 100: 43/50 = 86%.
Is this calculator free and private?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the numbers you type are never sent to a server or stored.
