How to compress an image to 1 MB online

Many upload forms, email services and apps stop at 1 MB per image, while a single phone photo today is often 3 to 8 MB. This page is preset to 1 MB (1024 KB). Drop your photos and each one comes back as a JPG just under 1 MB, usually at or near its original resolution.

Where a 1 MB limit shows up

  • Email attachments and online forms with a 1 MB limit per file
  • Photos for e-visa, scholarship and document portals that accept up to 1 MB
  • Sending full-resolution photos as a document in chat apps without huge files
  • Uploads to school, office and HR systems

How to compress a photo to 1 MB

  1. Drop your photos on the upload box, click to choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. The target is already set to 1 MB.
  2. Leave Resize on Keep: at 1 MB the tool normally keeps the original resolution and only lowers the JPG quality a little.
  3. Each image is compressed automatically; the file list shows the new size next to the original.
  4. Drag the before/after slider to check the quality. The result line shows the new dimensions, the file size and the JPG quality that was used.
  5. Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) when you compressed several images.

What fits in 1 MB

A 12-megapixel phone photo (about 4000 × 3000 px) often fits under 1 MB at full or near-full resolution; very detailed scenes such as foliage or crowds may be scaled to around 3000 px wide. Anything below that, such as screenshots or scans, usually keeps its size untouched. JPG is the safest format for forms and email. iPhone HEIC photos can be dropped straight onto the page and are saved as JPG, which every portal and email client can open.

Behind the scenes the tool does not guess. If your photo is over 1 MB, it runs a quick search for the highest JPG quality (up to 80%) that still lands under the limit, keeping about 1.5% headroom so the portal's own byte count never tips it over. Only when even 35% quality is too big does it scale the width and height down, step by step, and search again. If you set an exact pixel size under Resize, the dimensions are never changed: the quality may go lower instead, and a warning appears if 1 MB cannot be reached at that size.

Tips for the best result at 1 MB

  • Attaching many photos to one email? Compress them all here and send the ZIP; ten photos at under 1 MB each are far easier to send than 50 MB of originals.
  • If a portal counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, set the target to 970 KB under Compression.
  • For documents that belong together, turn the compressed images into a single PDF instead of many attachments.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a photo to under 1 MB?

Drop it on this page. The tool finds the highest JPG quality under 1 MB and keeps the original dimensions whenever it can. Then click Download.

Does compressing to 1 MB reduce the resolution?

Usually not, or only slightly. The quality is lowered first; the dimensions are reduced only for very detailed photos that cannot fit otherwise.

Can I compress iPhone HEIC photos to 1 MB?

Yes. Drag the HEIC files onto the page; they are converted in your browser and saved as JPG under 1 MB.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs entirely in your browser, so your images never leave your device. Camera and location data (EXIF) are also removed from the result.

Which image formats can I compress?

The file picker accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP; iPhone HEIC and TIFF files can be dragged onto the page. The 1 MB result is a JPG by default; you can switch to WebP or PNG under Format.
