1200 x 630 pixels: uses, aspect ratio and how to resize

When someone shares a link, apps such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp and X build a preview card from the page's og:image. 1200 × 630 pixels (about 1.91:1) is the size Facebook recommends for that image and the de facto standard everywhere else, because it looks sharp on high-resolution screens and fits the large, wide card most platforms show. This tool converts any picture, screenshot or design into that exact size in your browser, without uploading it.

How to create a 1200x630 Open Graph image

  1. Drop the image on the page, click to select it, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF and SVG are accepted.
  2. The output is preset to 1200 × 630 with Crop to fill. Pick Center, Top, Bottom, Left or Right to decide which part of the image stays in the frame.
  3. For a logo, product shot or tall screenshot that must stay complete, choose Fit with background and set a brand colour for the padding.
  4. Pick JPG or WebP for photos, PNG for text-heavy graphics, and adjust the quality or set a target size in KB.
  5. Download the file and reference it in your page's og:image tag. Resizing images for several articles? Add them all and download a ZIP.

How each platform shows a 1200x630 image

  • Facebook shows the image full width above the title in a 1.91:1 card; very small images (under about 600 × 315) are shown as a small thumbnail instead.
  • LinkedIn uses the same wide card; its own guidance mentions 1200 × 627, which is practically identical.
  • X with a summary_large_image card displays a 2:1 frame, so a thin strip at the top and bottom of a 1.91:1 image can be trimmed.
  • Slack, Discord, WhatsApp and iMessage read the same tag and scale the image down, sometimes to a small size, in chat.

Because of these small differences, keep headlines, logos and faces inside a central safe area, with roughly 60 to 80 px of breathing room from every edge. Avoid tiny text: a preview is often displayed at 500 px wide or less, so 40 px type in the 1200 px original becomes very small.

Tips for better link previews

  • Keep the file light. A JPG or WebP at 80 to 85% quality is usually well under 200 KB and loads quickly when crawlers fetch it.
  • Use an absolute URL in the og:image tag, and change the file name when you replace the image, because platforms cache previews.
  • Files are named with the {name}-{w}x{h} pattern by default (for example hero-1200x630.jpg), which makes it easy to tell social images apart from the originals.
  • Metadata such as camera model and GPS location is stripped automatically.

To shrink an existing preview image, use the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 1200x630 image?

It is the recommended size for an Open Graph (og:image) picture, the image shown in link previews on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and other apps.

What aspect ratio is 1200x630?

About 1.91:1. Facebook's link card uses this ratio, and LinkedIn's 1200 × 627 guideline is practically the same.

Does 1200x630 work for X (Twitter) cards?

Yes. The large image card on X uses a 2:1 frame, so only a thin strip at the top and bottom may be trimmed. Keep important content away from the edges.

What is the minimum Open Graph image size?

Facebook uses the large card layout for images of at least 600 × 315 pixels; 1200 × 630 is recommended for sharp results on high-resolution displays.

Which format is best for an og:image?

JPG or WebP for photos and PNG for graphics with text. Keep the file small so it loads quickly when the preview is generated.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is resized in your browser and never leaves your device.

What is the difference between 1200x630 and 630x1200?

They hold the same number of pixels, but 1200x630 is landscape and 630x1200 is the same frame turned on its side. This page always outputs 1200 × 630; for 630 × 1200, enter the size in the custom size resizer.
