How to compress an image to 10 KB online

A 10 KB limit is one of the strictest you will meet online. It usually applies to a scanned signature, a thumb impression or a very small ID-style photo in an application form. This page is preset to 10 KB: drop your image and it comes back as a JPG just under 10 KB, at the best quality that still fits.

Where a 10 KB limit shows up

  • Signature uploads in exam and recruitment forms with a 10 KB or 12 KB cap
  • Left-thumb impressions for bank and railway recruitment applications
  • Small photos for older e-governance and scholarship portals
  • Tiny avatars for forums, intranet directories and chat profiles

How to compress a photo to 10 KB

  1. Drop your photos on the upload box, click to choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. The target is already set to 10 KB.
  2. If the form also fixes the pixel size (for example 140 × 60 px for a signature), open Resize, choose Exact and enter it. Otherwise leave Keep selected.
  3. Each image is compressed automatically; the file list shows the new size next to the original.
  4. Drag the before/after slider to check the quality. The result line shows the new dimensions, the file size and the JPG quality that was used.
  5. Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) when you compressed several images.

What fits in 10 KB

At 10 KB a JPG holds roughly 40,000 to 60,000 pixels of a normal photo with decent detail, so think about 200 × 230 px for a face. A signature can be much wider, because the white paper around the ink costs almost nothing: a cropped 300 × 100 px signature often ends up at only 4 to 6 KB. A full 12-megapixel phone photo cannot stay sharp at 10 KB, so the tool shrinks it to a few hundred pixels. Keep the output as JPG: almost every form with a 10 KB limit accepts only JPG/JPEG, and PNG is far larger for photos.

Behind the scenes the tool does not guess. If your photo is over 10 KB, it runs a quick search for the highest JPG quality (up to 80%) that still lands under the limit, keeping about 1.5% headroom so the portal's own byte count never tips it over. Only when even 35% quality is too big does it scale the width and height down, step by step, and search again. If you set an exact pixel size under Resize, the dimensions are never changed: the quality may go lower instead, and a warning appears if 10 KB cannot be reached at that size.

Tips for the best result at 10 KB

  • Crop tightly first. A signature photographed on a full A4 sheet wastes most of the 10 KB on empty paper.
  • Sign with a black or dark-blue pen on plain white paper and shoot in daylight: shadows and grey paper texture eat bytes.
  • If the form asks for a range such as 4 to 12 KB, stay close to the upper limit; a 9 KB file looks clearly better than a 3 KB one.

Private, free and unlimited

Everything runs in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded, camera and location data (EXIF) are removed from every result, and there is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Need to create the signature first? Draw or type one with the signature generator, trim the edges with the image cropper, and if your photo slot allows more, use compress to 20 KB for visibly better quality.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a signature to under 10 KB?

Scan or photograph the signature on white paper, crop it to the ink and drop it here. A cropped signature usually lands well under 10 KB at high quality, because plain white areas compress to almost nothing.

Can a passport-size photo be 10 KB?

Yes, if it is small in pixels. At about 200 × 230 px a face photo fits in 10 KB with acceptable detail, and the tool automatically reduces a larger photo until it fits.

My 10 KB image looks blurry. What can I do?

Crop away the background, use a plain light background and check whether the form allows 20 KB instead. Fewer pixels and less texture leave more bytes for the face or the ink.

The portal says my 10 KB file is too big. Why?

Some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes instead of 1,024. Type 9 into the target size box under Compression and the file will pass either way.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs entirely in your browser, so your images never leave your device. Camera and location data (EXIF) are also removed from the result.

Which image formats can I compress?

The file picker accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP; iPhone HEIC and TIFF files can be dragged onto the page. The 10 KB result is a JPG by default; you can switch to WebP or PNG under Format.
