How to make a YouTube thumbnail
- Pick a template, or upload a photo first (up to 10 MB).
- Click a text line under Text Layers and change the words, size, colors and position.
- Add your photo: it becomes the background and the template text stays on top.
- Add shapes such as an arrow or a star, or effects such as a vignette, if they help.

YouTube recommends custom thumbnails at 1280x720 pixels (16:9) with a minimum width of 640 pixels, as JPG, GIF or PNG, under 2 MB. This tool exports a 1280x720 JPG, usually well under 100 KB, so it always fits. To upload a custom thumbnail you may need to verify your channel with a phone number first.

- Use three to five big words at most. The thumbnail is often seen at phone size.
- Do not repeat the video title: add something the title does not say.
- Show a face or the main object large and close, with strong emotion or contrast.
- Use a thick outline on the text so it reads on any background.
- Keep the bottom right corner clear: YouTube puts the video length there.
- Use the same colors and layout for a series so viewers recognize it.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?
YouTube only allows custom thumbnails on channels that are verified, usually with a phone number, and some channels need a short history first. Verify your channel in YouTube Studio and try again.
