How to sharpen an image online without halos

Photos that are almost sharp, such as a portrait with soft eyes, a product shot that lost crispness after resizing or an old compact-camera picture, often need only a controlled boost of edge contrast. The Image Sharpener gives you several proven sharpening methods with the same controls photo editors use, runs entirely in your browser and exports the result at full resolution.

How to sharpen a blurry image online

  1. Upload your photo (any common format your browser can open, up to 10 MB). The tool immediately shows a sharpness score and a detail level so you can see how soft the image really is.
  2. Pick a starting preset: Subtle, Moderate, Strong, Extreme, Portrait or Landscape.
  3. Choose a method and refine Amount (0 to 300%), Radius (0.1 to 5 px) and Threshold (0 to 50).
  4. Decide where sharpening applies: the whole image, only on detected edges, or on areas you paint with a brush.
  5. Click apply, compare with the original using the toggle, and download the sharpened PNG.

Sharpening methods

  • Unsharp Mask: the classic technique. Radius sets how wide the edge halo is, amount sets its strength and threshold protects smooth areas such as skin and sky.
  • Smart Sharp: adapts the strength to local variance, so busy textures get less and soft edges get more.
  • High Pass: frequency-based sharpening with separate high, mid and low frequency sliders for fine detail versus larger structures.
  • Clarity: boosts micro contrast, detail and structure for a punchier look on landscapes and architecture.
  • Enhance: detail enhancement with optional noise reduction (none, low, medium, high), useful for noisy phone shots.
  • Edge: strengthens detected contours with an adjustable edge strength.

Four switches refine every method: Adaptive, Anti-Halo (limits the bright and dark outlines that over-sharpening creates), Luminance Only (sharpens brightness without colour fringes) and Preserve Colors. In Edge selection mode you can choose the edge detector (Sobel, Laplacian, Canny, Prewitt or Scharr) and preview the edge map. In Mask mode, click Invert to start from an empty mask, then paint only the eyes, the logo or the text you want crisper with a 10 to 100 px brush.

Tips for natural sharpening

Sharpening can only emphasise detail that was captured; it cannot rescue strong motion blur or a completely missed focus. View the result at 100% and back off as soon as halos appear around high-contrast edges. For portraits keep the radius around 1 px and raise the threshold so skin stays smooth; for landscapes and buildings a larger radius or the Clarity method works better. Sharpen as the last step, after resizing: if you plan to enlarge an image, run it through the image upscaler first, and if it is grainy, clean it with the noise reducer before sharpening so the grain is not amplified.

Why use this image sharpener

All processing happens on your device with the canvas API, so private photos are never uploaded. The output keeps the original pixel dimensions and is saved as a lossless PNG, with no watermark, no account and no daily limit.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make a blurry picture clearer?

Upload it, choose a preset such as Moderate or Portrait, then adjust amount, radius and threshold until details look crisp without halos. Click apply and download the PNG.

Can a sharpener fix a completely out-of-focus photo?

No. Sharpening increases contrast along existing edges, so it improves slightly soft images but cannot recreate detail lost to strong motion blur or missed focus.

What is the difference between unsharp mask and high pass?

Unsharp mask adds contrast around edges controlled by radius, amount and threshold. High pass separates the image into frequencies so you can boost fine detail and larger structures independently.

How do I avoid halos when sharpening?

Keep the Anti-Halo option on, lower the amount or radius and use Luminance Only to avoid colour fringes. Check the result at 100% zoom.

Can I sharpen only part of a photo?

Yes. Use Edge mode to limit sharpening to detected edges, or Mask mode: click Invert to clear the mask, then paint the areas you want sharpened.

Is my photo uploaded or reduced in size?

No. The image is processed in your browser at its original resolution and saved as a lossless PNG.
