About this tool

A blurred background puts all the attention on your subject, the way a portrait lens or phone portrait mode does. This background blur tool finds the subject in your photo, keeps it sharp and blurs everything behind it. You can refine the selection with a brush, choose from seven blur styles and control how soft the edge is. The photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

How to blur a photo background

  1. Upload your photo.
  2. Choose how to find the subject: Auto, Person, Object, Center or Manual, then click Detect Subject.
  3. Check the mask. Use the brush to add missed areas, subtract background or refine the edge.
  4. Pick a blur style and strength, and set edge feathering.
  5. Compare with the live preview and download.

Blur styles

  • Bokeh: soft, round highlights like a fast DSLR lens.
  • Lens: natural optical blur.
  • Gaussian: smooth, even blur.
  • Radial and zoom: motion from the center, for energetic sports or product shots.
  • Motion: directional streaks that suggest speed.
  • Tilt-shift: a sharp band with blurred top and bottom, which makes scenes look like miniatures.

Getting a natural result

  • Detection works best when the subject is clearly separated from the background by color and contrast. For busy scenes, finish the selection with the manual brush.
  • Refine hair and edges with a small brush and a little feathering; a hard cut-out edge looks fake.
  • Do not overdo it: real lenses blur gradually, so a medium strength often looks more believable than the maximum.
  • Higher edge quality takes a little longer but gives cleaner borders.

Where it is useful

Profile pictures, product photos on busy tables, real estate details, event shots and social posts where the background distracts. Want to replace the background instead of blurring it? Use the background remover, which uses an AI model in your browser to cut out the subject.

Frequently asked questions

How do I blur the background of a photo?

Upload the photo, detect the subject, refine the mask with the brush if needed, choose a blur style and strength, and download.

Can I fix parts the detection missed?

Yes. Use the brush in add mode to include missed parts of the subject, subtract mode to remove background, and refine mode for edges.

Which blur style looks most like a DSLR?

Bokeh or lens blur, at a medium strength with soft edge feathering.

Does it work for objects as well as people?

Yes. Choose Object or Center detection for products and things, or paint the subject manually.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Detection and blurring run in your browser.

Why does the edge around hair look rough?

Fine hair is hard to separate. Zoom in, refine the edge with a small brush, add a little feathering and choose a higher edge quality.
