How to make an animated GIF online

The WoowTools GIF Maker & Editor builds animated GIFs from two kinds of source: a sequence of still images or a short video clip. Load your frames, preview the animation on a timeline, tune speed, size and quality, add a looping motion effect or a caption, and export a standard .gif file that plays in chats, emails, documentation and social posts. The whole process runs in your browser: frames are drawn on a canvas and encoded locally, so your pictures and videos are never uploaded.

How to make a GIF

  1. Choose the source: Images to animate a set of photos, screenshots or drawings, or Video to turn a clip into a GIF.
  2. Upload your files. Images become one frame each, in the order you add them, and are cropped to fill the GIF canvas. A video is sampled at the current frame rate, up to a maximum of 100 frames.
  3. Check the result in the preview: play and pause it, step frame by frame, or click any thumbnail in the frame strip.
  4. Adjust the GIF settings: speed (25 to 400 %), quality (10 to 100 %) and output width and height (480 × 480 px by default).
  5. Add an effect or text if you like, then click Create GIF and download the animated file.

Effects and editing options

  • Motion effects: Bounce, Fade, Slide, Zoom and Rotate animate the frames over the length of the GIF: handy for turning a single product shot or logo into something that moves.
  • Reverse plays the frames backwards, and Boomerang plays them forward and then backward for that seamless back-and-forth loop.
  • Adjustments: brightness and contrast (50 to 150 %) and saturation (0 to 200 %) are applied to every frame, so a whole clip can be brightened or turned black-and-white in one move.
  • Text captions: type a word or short phrase and it is placed in the centre of every frame in bold white with a soft shadow; add several captions and remove any of them with one click.

Tips for small, sharp GIFs

GIF is an old format with a 256-color palette per frame, so file size grows quickly. Keep animations short: a few seconds is usually enough for a reaction or a UI demo. Lower the width and height before exporting; 480 px is plenty for chat apps and documentation, while 320 px keeps email attachments light. The quality slider trades color accuracy for speed and size: 70 to 80 % is a good balance for screenshots, higher values help with photos and gradients. For a video, set the frame rate before uploading it, because it decides how many frames are sampled; 10 fps looks smooth for most clips and keeps the frame count low.

For captioned still images, try the Meme Generator.

Popular uses

Step-by-step tutorials built from screenshots, before-and-after sequences, product spins made from a few photos, animated banners, reaction GIFs from your own videos and quick explainers in bug reports or pull requests. Because the images are cropped to a fixed canvas, animations built from photos of different sizes still look consistent from frame to frame.

Why use this GIF maker

It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. Encoding happens on your device with background web workers, so large sets of frames do not freeze the page, and nothing is stored on a server once you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF from pictures?

Choose Images as the source, upload your photos in the order they should play, adjust speed and size, then click Create GIF and download the file.

Can I turn a video into a GIF?

Yes. Choose Video as the source and upload a clip. Frames are sampled at the selected frame rate, up to 100 frames, and you can then add effects and text before exporting.

How do I make a GIF smaller?

Reduce the width and height, use fewer frames or a lower frame rate for video, and lower the quality slider. Short GIFs of a few seconds stay small.

What is a boomerang GIF?

A boomerang plays the frames forward and then backward, creating a smooth back-and-forth loop. Tick Boomerang in the Effects panel to create one.

Can I add text to a GIF?

Yes. Use Add Text to place a caption in the centre of every frame in bold white with a shadow. You can add several captions and remove them individually.

Are my images or videos uploaded?

No. Frames are drawn and encoded in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Does the GIF have a watermark?

No. The GIF maker is free and adds no watermark or logo.
