About this tool
This video to text converter writes out everything that is said in a video. Drop in a lecture, a Zoom or Teams recording, a tutorial, an interview or a phone clip, and Whisper AI returns a punctuated transcript you can edit, copy or save. You do not need to convert the video first: the tool pulls the speech out of the MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file for you.
How to convert a video to text
- Drop the video on the page or click to choose it.
- Leave Spoken language on Auto-detect, or choose it if the video mixes languages.
- Pick Fast or Best accuracy, then click Transcribe.
- Wait while the audio is prepared on your device and transcribed, then copy the text or Download .txt.
Why big videos are not a problem
A 25 minute 1080p phone video can easily be 1 to 3 GB. Uploading that would take ages, so the tool never sends the video. Your browser extracts the soundtrack and converts it to a small mono file of about 9 MB for 25 minutes, and only that file goes to our AI. The picture never leaves your device.
What people transcribe
| Video | What the text is good for |
|---|---|
| Lectures and webinars | Study notes, searchable summaries |
| Zoom, Teams and Meet recordings | Meeting minutes and action points |
| Your own YouTube or TikTok videos | Descriptions, blog posts, a draft for captions |
| Interviews and testimonials | Exact quotes for articles and case studies |
| Tutorials and screen recordings | Written step by step guides |
Videos longer than 25 minutes
Each file can be up to 25 minutes. For a longer video, use the MP4 to MP3 converter with its start and end fields to save parts such as 0:00 to 25:00 and 25:00 to 50:00 as MP3, then transcribe each part here. The MP3 parts are small and fast to process.
Good to know
- The result is plain text without timestamps. To make subtitles, paste it into a caption editor and set the timing there.
- Background music lowers accuracy. Choose Best accuracy for music videos, vlogs and busy rooms.
- A video recorded without sound shows "This file has no audio track".
Privacy
Only the shrunk audio is sent, over an encrypted connection. It is transcribed by our AI and deleted right after; we keep neither the audio nor the text. Already have just the audio file? Use speech to text, which also lets you record from a microphone.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a video to text for free?
Drop the MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video on this page and click Transcribe. The speech is extracted in your browser, transcribed by Whisper AI, and the text appears ready to copy or download as .txt.
Do I need to convert the video to MP3 first?
No. The tool extracts and shrinks the audio from the video by itself. Converting to MP3 first only helps when you want to split a video longer than 25 minutes into parts.
Is my whole video uploaded?
No. Only a small mono copy of the audio, about 9 MB for 25 minutes, is sent to our AI. The video picture never leaves your device, and the audio is deleted right after transcription.
How long can the video be?
Up to 25 minutes per file. For longer videos, save parts as MP3 with the MP4 to MP3 converter's start and end fields and transcribe them one by one.
Can I get subtitles or timestamps?
Not directly. The tool gives plain punctuated text without timestamps. You can paste it into a subtitle editor and time the lines there, which is much faster than typing captions from scratch.
Can it transcribe a YouTube video?
It works on video files you have on your device. For your own YouTube videos, download the file from YouTube Studio and drop it here. Only transcribe videos you have the right to use.
