About this tool
This free audio converter changes any sound file into the format you need: MP3, WAV, M4A (AAC), OGG (Opus) or FLAC. Use it as an MP3 converter for files that will not play in your car or phone, turn a WAV recording into a small MP3, or save a podcast as M4A for iTunes. You can drop up to 20 files at once, and even a video, in which case only its sound is kept. Everything is decoded and encoded inside your browser with your device's own encoders, so the files never leave your computer.
How to convert audio files
- Drop one or more audio files on the page, or click to choose them. Videos work too.
- Pick the output format: MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC.
- For MP3, M4A and OGG, choose a bitrate. Tick Mono for speech to halve the size.
- Click Convert. Each file shows its own progress bar.
- Play the result, then click Download next to each file, or download them all.
Which audio format should I choose?
| Format | Type | Best for | Size per minute (stereo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP3, 192 kbps | Lossy | Playing anywhere: phones, cars, every app | about 1.4 MB |
| M4A (AAC), 192 kbps | Lossy | iPhone, Mac, iTunes and ringtones | about 1.4 MB |
| OGG (Opus), 128 kbps | Lossy | Web, games and voice; good sound at low rates | about 1 MB |
| FLAC | Lossless | Archiving music without losing detail | often about half of WAV |
| WAV, 16 bit | Uncompressed | Editing in Audacity or a DAW | about 10 MB at 44.1 kHz |
Tips for the best result
- Converting a lossy file (MP3, M4A, OGG) to WAV or FLAC does not bring back lost detail. It only makes the file bigger, which is useful when an editor needs WAV.
- For music, 192 kbps MP3 or AAC sounds close to the source for most listeners. For podcasts and voice notes, 128 kbps or Opus at 64 kbps with Mono is plenty.
- Surround (5.1) sound is mixed down to stereo, which every player supports.
- If OGG or M4A is greyed out, your browser has no encoder for it. The latest Chrome or Edge supports the most formats. FLAC and MP3 work in every modern browser.
Your files stay private: no upload, no account and no watermark. Need to keep only part of a song? Use the MP3 cutter. Taking the sound out of a video? The MP4 to MP3 converter also trims while it converts. Want the words as text? Try speech to text.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert audio to MP3 for free?
Drop the audio file on this page, keep MP3 selected, choose a bitrate such as 192 kbps and click Convert. The MP3 is made in your browser in seconds and is ready to download. There is no sign up, no watermark and no upload.
Can I convert several audio files at once?
Yes. Drop up to 20 files together and they are converted one after another with the same settings. Each file gets its own player and download button, and a Download all button appears when more than one is done.
Which formats can this audio converter read and write?
It reads MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and WebM audio, plus the sound track of MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM videos. It writes MP3, WAV, M4A (AAC), OGG (Opus) and FLAC; M4A and OGG need a browser with an encoder for them.
What bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps is a good choice for music in MP3 or AAC, and 320 kbps MP3 if you want the most detail. For speech, 128 kbps or Opus at 64 kbps with Mono keeps files small while staying clear.
Why are OGG or M4A greyed out?
The tool uses the audio encoders built into your browser for OGG (Opus) and M4A (AAC), and some browsers do not include them. Open the page in the latest Chrome or Edge, which support the most formats, or pick MP3, WAV or FLAC instead.
Are my audio files uploaded to a server?
No. The audio converter runs completely in your browser, so your files are read, converted and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers, which also means there is no file size limit other than your device's memory.
