About this tool
This ringtone maker turns the best part of a song into a ringtone for your phone. Open the track, drag the handles to the hook or chorus, and the selection stays within 30 seconds, the length an iPhone accepts without trouble. Add a short fade, then download an M4R file for iPhone or an MP3 or M4A for Android. The song is cut and encoded in your browser, so it is never uploaded.
How to make a ringtone
- Drop a song, voice memo or video on the page.
- Drag the selection to the part you want to hear when the phone rings. It is limited to 30 seconds.
- Click Play selection to check it, and keep the 1 second fade out for a smooth stop.
- Keep M4A (AAC) selected and click Cut and save.
- Click iPhone ringtone (.m4r) for an iPhone, or the M4A or MP3 download for Android.
Ringtone formats by phone
| Phone | File | Length | How to add it |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | .m4r (AAC) | 30 seconds is safe, 40 is the maximum | Drag it onto the iPhone in Finder (Mac) or in iTunes or Apple Devices (Windows) |
| Android | .mp3 or .m4a | No fixed limit | Copy it to the Ringtones folder, then choose it in Settings, Sound |
Tips for a good ringtone
- Start on the hook, not on the first bar of the song: a ringtone should be recognisable within two seconds.
- Keep the fade in short or off, so the ring is heard right away.
- An M4R file is simply an M4A with a different extension, which is why both downloads are offered.
- On iPhone, the new tone appears in Settings, Sounds and Haptics, Ringtone once it is synced.
Use music you own or have the right to use. To take the sound from a video clip first, use MP4 to MP3. Need an M4A as MP3 for an older phone? M4A to MP3 converts it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a ringtone for my iPhone?
Open the song here, pick up to 30 seconds, keep M4A selected and click Cut and save, then click iPhone ringtone (.m4r). Drag the .m4r file onto your iPhone in Finder on a Mac, or in iTunes or Apple Devices on Windows.
How long can an iPhone ringtone be?
Up to 40 seconds, but 30 seconds is the safe length that always syncs. Text tones should be much shorter, about 10 seconds.
What is an M4R file?
M4R is the iPhone ringtone format. It holds the same AAC audio as an M4A file, only with the .m4r extension so the iPhone lists it as a ringtone.
How do I set a custom ringtone on Android?
Download the MP3 or M4A, copy it to the Ringtones folder on the phone, then open Settings, Sound and choose it as the phone ringtone.
Can I make a ringtone from a video?
Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV or WebM video and its soundtrack appears on the waveform, ready to cut.
Is the ringtone maker free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser, so your music is never uploaded.
