About this tool
This audio to text converter turns recorded speech into readable text. Drop in an interview, podcast episode, lecture, voicemail or call recording, and Whisper, a speech recognition model trained on a huge range of voices and accents, writes it out with punctuation and capital letters. You get plain text that you can correct in the box, copy into a document or download as a .txt file.
How to convert audio to text
- Drop your audio file on the page or click to choose it.
- Leave Spoken language on Auto-detect, or pick it for short or noisy recordings.
- Choose Fast for a quick draft or Best accuracy for interviews and names.
- Click Transcribe. When the text appears, edit it, then use Copy text or Download .txt.
Which audio files work?
| Format | Typical source |
|---|---|
| MP3 | Podcasts, downloaded lectures, most recorders |
| M4A | iPhone Voice Memos, Android recorders |
| WAV | Field recorders, Audacity and DAW exports, call recorders |
| OGG and OPUS | WhatsApp and Telegram voice messages |
| FLAC | Archived or high quality recordings |
How much text will I get?
People speak about 130 to 160 words a minute, so a 10 minute interview gives roughly 1,300 to 1,600 words, and the 25 minute maximum about 3,000 to 4,000 words. The Words counter under the result shows the exact number. Transcription usually takes about a quarter of the audio length, a little longer in Best accuracy mode.
What the transcript includes
- Included: the spoken words with punctuation and sentence capitals, and the detected language.
- Not included: timestamps and speaker names. Add speaker labels yourself while proofreading, which is quick in the edit box.
- Longer than 25 minutes? Cut the recording into parts first, for example with the start and end fields of the MP4 to MP3 converter, which also accepts audio files.
Tips for accurate results
- Use the cleanest copy of the recording you have; every re-share through a chat app lowers the quality.
- For a recording in one language with a few foreign names, set the language instead of Auto-detect.
- Always check numbers, prices and names before you publish or quote the text.
Privacy
Your browser first shrinks the audio to a small mono file, about 9 MB for 25 minutes, so it uploads quickly. It is sent over an encrypted connection to our AI, transcribed and deleted right after. We do not keep the audio or the text and never use them for training. For the reverse, turning text into spoken audio, see text to speech.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an audio file to text for free?
Drop the MP3, M4A, WAV or other audio file on this page and click Transcribe. Whisper AI writes out the speech in about a quarter of the audio length, and you can copy it or download a .txt file. No sign-up.
Can I convert MP3 to text?
Yes. MP3 works directly, as do M4A, WAV, OGG, OPUS and FLAC, and videos such as MP4 and MOV.
How long can the audio file be?
Up to 25 minutes per file, which is about 3,000 to 4,000 words. Cut longer recordings into parts and transcribe them one after another.
Does the transcript include timestamps or speaker names?
No. You get clean text with punctuation, but no timestamps or speaker labels. You can add speaker names in the edit box before copying the text.
Is my audio stored?
No. The audio is sent securely to our AI, transcribed and deleted right after. We do not keep recordings or transcripts, and they are never used to train models.
Which languages can it transcribe?
Auto-detect recognises the spoken language for you, and you can choose from 19 common languages in the menu, including English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic and Chinese.
