To trim a video, open the free Video Trimmer, drop your clip, set where it should start and end, and click Trim video. Pick Fast, lossless to cut in seconds with no quality loss, or Precise for a frame exact cut. Everything runs in your browser, so the video is never uploaded.
Below: the steps, the one thing every lossless trimmer does that surprises people, and how to trim on a phone.
How to trim a video online (step by step)
- Open Video Trimmer in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
- Drop your video onto the page. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV all work. The player loads the clip and shows its length and resolution.
- Play the video and pause where the clip should begin. Click Set start here. Do the same at the end and click Set end here.
- Fine tune with the two handles under the player, or type exact times into Start and End, for example
0:12.5and1:03. - Click Play selection to watch only the part you kept.
- Under Cut method, choose Fast, lossless or Precise (re-encode MP4).
- Click Trim video, watch the result in the preview, and download it.
The result panel shows the trimmed size, the real length and the method used (stream copy or re encoded), so you know exactly what you got.
Fast or Precise: which cut should you choose?
This is the decision that matters most, and most trimmers make it for you without saying so.
| Fast, lossless | Precise | |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Identical to the original | Re compressed at high quality |
| Speed | Seconds, even for long videos | Slower, depends on length and device |
| Start point | Snaps to the keyframe before your start | Exactly the frame you chose |
| Output | Same container family (MP4, or WebM for WebM) | MP4 (H.264 and AAC) |
| Best for | Cutting off the start and end of a recording | Clips where the first frame must be exact |
For most jobs, such as removing the first minute of a screen recording or keeping the highlight of a match, Fast is the right choice. Use Precise when a clip must start on an exact word or beat.
Why does a lossless trim start a little early?
Videos are not stored as separate pictures. Every so often there is a full picture called a keyframe, and the frames in between only store what changed. A lossless trim copies the existing data, so it can only begin on a keyframe. If you set the start between two keyframes, the clip begins at the keyframe before it.
Phones usually place keyframes every one or two seconds, so the extra bit is short. The trimmer measures the real result and tells you, for example "The clip is 1.2 s longer than your selection", and suggests Precise if that matters. The end point is not affected in the same way, so your clip still stops where you asked.
If a file's streams can not be copied into the output as they are, the tool switches to re encoding by itself and tells you, so you always get a playable video.
How to trim a video on iPhone or Android
Phones have a basic trim in the Photos or Gallery app, and that is fine for a quick cut. The browser trimmer helps when you want exact times, a lossless file to share, or a clip from a file that is not in your gallery, such as a download or a recording from another app.
- Open Video Trimmer in Safari or Chrome on the phone.
- Tap the drop area and pick the video from Photos or Files.
- Use Set start here and Set end here while it plays, check with Play selection, and trim.
- Download and share or save the result.
Precise mode uses your phone's video encoder, so it is slower on older phones. Fast mode is quick on any device.
Can you cut a part out of the middle of a video?
The trimmer keeps one continuous range, which covers the most common job: removing a slow start, a long ending, or both. To remove a part from the middle, trim the video twice, once for the section before the unwanted part and once for the section after it, then join the two clips in a video editor such as the Photos app on Windows or iMovie on a Mac. Use Fast mode for both cuts so neither half loses quality.
If you only need a short highlight, the easier route is to keep just that moment: set the start and end around it and trim once.
What to do after trimming
Trimming is often step one. These tools pick up where it ends:
- File still too big to send? Run it through the Video Compressor to shrink it for email or chat apps.
- Recorded on an iPhone and the file is MOV? Convert it with MOV to MP4; our guide on how to convert MOV to MP4 explains when that is lossless too.
- Only need the sound? Extract Audio from Video saves the soundtrack as MP3.
- Want a short loop to post? Video to GIF turns a few seconds into an animated GIF.
Is it safe to trim videos online?
Most online trimmers upload your video to their servers, which takes time on large files and means a copy of your footage sits on someone else's computer. This trimmer reads and writes the file inside your browser using the WebCodecs video features that modern browsers include. Nothing is sent anywhere, there is no account, and no watermark is added.
Common video trimming mistakes
- Using Precise for every cut. It re compresses the whole clip. Fast keeps the original quality and is much quicker.
- Not checking the start. With Fast, watch the first second of the result; if it shows a bit you wanted gone, run it again with Precise.
- Trimming a huge file on an old phone. A computer handles long 4K videos far more comfortably.
Ready? Open the Video Trimmer, drop your clip and keep only the part that matters.
Frequently asked questions
How do I trim a video without losing quality?
Use a lossless cut that copies the original streams instead of re encoding them. In the WoowTools Video Trimmer, choose Fast, lossless: the output has exactly the same quality as the original and takes only seconds.
Why does my trimmed video start a second early?
A lossless trim can only begin on a keyframe, so it starts at the keyframe just before your chosen point. Choose the Precise method if the first frame must be exact.
Can I trim a video online without uploading it?
Yes. The WoowTools Video Trimmer works inside your browser, so the video stays on your device. There is no upload wait and no copy on a server.
Which video formats can I trim?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. Lossless cuts keep the original streams; Precise cuts save an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, or WebM if the browser can not encode those.
Is the video trimmer free?
Yes. It is free with no sign up, no watermark and no limit on how many videos you trim.
