To compress a video for WhatsApp, shrink it to about 16 MB at 720p before you send it, so WhatsApp has little left to squash and the video plays straight in the chat. Open the free Compress Video for WhatsApp tool on your phone, pick the video, keep the 16 MB WhatsApp target, tap Compress and send the MP4. It runs in your phone's browser; the video is not uploaded to us.
You keep control of how the video is reduced instead of leaving it to WhatsApp, and it sends much faster on mobile data.
Why does WhatsApp make videos blurry?
WhatsApp re-compresses every video you send as a normal video message. A one minute 1080p or 4K phone video is often 100 to 400 MB, and WhatsApp cuts it down hard so it travels quickly over any connection. It lowers the resolution and the bitrate in one go, and fast moving scenes, low light and fine detail suffer most.
WhatsApp's HD option, added in 2023, keeps more quality than Standard, but the video is still re-encoded. When you compress the video yourself to a sensible size first, there is much less for WhatsApp to throw away, and you choose what to keep: a smaller picture with clean detail, or the full size with lower bitrate.
How to compress a video for WhatsApp (step by step)
- Open Compress Video for WhatsApp in Safari or Chrome on your phone, or on a computer.
- Tap to pick the video from your gallery or files. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV all work, including iPhone videos.
- By file size and 16 MB (WhatsApp) are already selected.
- For videos longer than about 2 minutes, choose 720p or 480p under Resolution.
- Tap Compress video and wait; your phone's own video encoder does the work.
- Download the MP4 and attach it in WhatsApp from your gallery or Files, as a video.
The tool calculates the bitrate from the video's length so the file lands just under the target, and keeps the sound at 96 kbps, clear enough for voices and music.
What fits in 16 MB?
The length of the video decides how much data each second gets. Here is what the 16 MB target gives you.
| Video length | Video bitrate | Best resolution |
|---|---|---|
| 30 seconds | about 4 Mbps | Original (1080p) |
| 1 minute | about 2 Mbps | 1080p or 720p |
| 2 minutes | about 950 kbps | 720p |
| 3 minutes | about 600 kbps | 480p |
| 5 minutes | about 320 kbps | 480p or 360p |
With sound, 16 MB holds a little under 10 minutes. Without sound it holds about 17 minutes. Anything past 3 or 4 minutes is better trimmed first with the video trimmer, or sent as a document (below).
Send as a video or as a document?
WhatsApp gives you two ways to share a video, and they behave very differently.
| Send as video | Send as document | |
|---|---|---|
| Plays in the chat | Yes, with a preview | No, the other person downloads it first |
| WhatsApp compression | Yes | No, the file arrives exactly as sent |
| Size limit | Much lower than documents | Up to 2 GB |
| Best for | Everyday clips, family videos, Status | Originals for editing, long recordings |
To send a document, tap the attach icon, choose Document, and pick the video file instead of choosing it from the gallery. For everything people will watch on their phones, compress to 16 MB and send it as a video: it plays instantly, uses less of their data, and looks better than WhatsApp's own squeeze of the full size file.
Tips for sharper WhatsApp videos
- Lower the resolution before the bitrate gets too low. Below about 1 Mbps, 720p looks sharper than 1080p, and below 500 kbps 480p wins.
- Remove the sound when it adds nothing. Tick Remove audio and the picture gets the extra space. For a silent video of a product or a room, that is free quality.
- Hold the phone still. Shaky footage and pans need far more bitrate than steady shots.
- Record in good light. Dark scenes are full of noise, which compresses badly.
- Start from the original. A video that already went through WhatsApp once is already compressed; compressing it again makes it worse.
How to record smaller videos for WhatsApp
The easiest video to send is one that was never huge. Most phones record in 4K or 1080p at 60 frames per second by default, which fills 100 MB or more every minute. If you mostly share videos in chats, a lower camera setting saves space and compression time.
- iPhone: open Settings, then Camera, then Record Video, and choose 1080p HD at 30 fps instead of 4K. You can switch back for special moments.
- Android: open the Camera app, tap the settings gear, then Video size or Video resolution, and choose FHD (1080p) or HD (720p). Menu names vary by phone maker.
- Turn off HDR video for chat clips if your phone records it. HDR colours often look washed out after any compression.
A 1080p video at 30 fps is roughly a third the size of a 4K one, so the 16 MB target leaves far more bitrate for each second. Keep 4K for the videos you will edit or keep, and send those as documents.
Is it safe to compress private videos online?
Most online compressors upload your video to a server. WoowTools compresses it inside your browser, using your phone or computer's own hardware, so family videos, documents filmed on your phone and anything private stay on your device. The only upload is the one you make to WhatsApp.
Need a different size, for example 25 MB for email? Use the full video compressor. Only need the sound of a video, like a voice note or a song? Convert it with the MP4 to MP3 converter. For everyday clips, open Compress Video for WhatsApp and send sharper videos from today.
Frequently asked questions
What is the video size limit on WhatsApp?
Videos sent as normal video messages are re-compressed by WhatsApp and have a much lower size limit than documents, which can be up to 2 GB. Compressing to about 16 MB yourself keeps quality under your control and sends quickly.
How do I send a long video on WhatsApp without losing quality?
Send it as a document: tap attach, choose Document and pick the file. It arrives exactly as sent, up to 2 GB, but the other person must download it before watching.
How do I compress a video for WhatsApp on iPhone or Android?
Open Compress Video for WhatsApp in Safari or Chrome, pick the video, keep the 16 MB target and tap Compress video. Download the MP4 and attach it in WhatsApp.
Why does my WhatsApp video look blurry?
WhatsApp re-compresses large videos heavily. Compress the video yourself first, at 720p for clips longer than about a minute, so WhatsApp has little left to squash.
Is my video uploaded to your servers?
No. Compression runs in your browser with your device's own video encoder. Nothing is sent to WoowTools.
