To compress a video for Discord, reduce it to just under the free upload limit, which is 20 MB per file since August 2026. Drop the clip into the free Compress Video for Discord tool, keep the Discord size target, pick 720p for anything longer than about two minutes, and download an MP4 that uploads without Nitro and plays inline in the chat. The video is compressed on your own device and never uploaded to us.
If Discord just told you "Your files are too powerful", this is the fastest fix.
What is Discord's file size limit in 2026?
Discord's free upload limit is 20 MB per file. It raised the cap from 10 MB on 13 August 2026, two years after cutting it from 25 MB to 10 MB.
| Plan | Upload limit per file |
|---|---|
| Free | 20 MB |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB |
| Nitro | 500 MB |
One change catches phone users out: Discord on mobile now checks the file size before its own compression, the same way desktop does. A phone video that used to squeeze through can now be refused, so compress it first.
Aim a little under the limit, around 18 MB. MP4 files carry a small container overhead, and a file that lands at 20.1 MB is refused.
How to compress a video for Discord (step by step)
- Open Compress Video for Discord on your computer or phone.
- Drop the clip on the page or tap to choose it. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work.
- By file size and the Discord target are already selected.
- For clips longer than about 2 minutes, choose 720p or 480p under Resolution.
- Tick Remove audio if the clip does not need sound; it frees space for the picture.
- Click Compress video, check the new size and download the MP4.
- Drag the file into your Discord channel or DM.
The tool works out the exact bitrate from your clip's length, keeps 96 kbps for the sound, and encodes with your device's own video encoder, so a one minute clip usually takes seconds rather than minutes.
How long can a video be for Discord?
At 18 MB, the length of the clip decides the quality. This table shows the video bitrate the tool will use and the resolution that looks best.
| Clip length | Video bitrate | Best resolution |
|---|---|---|
| 15 seconds | about 9 Mbps | 1080p |
| 30 seconds | about 4.6 Mbps | 1080p |
| 1 minute | about 2.3 Mbps | 1080p or 720p |
| 2 minutes | about 1.1 Mbps | 720p |
| 4 minutes | about 500 kbps | 480p |
With sound, an 18 MB file holds just under 11 minutes before the picture breaks down. Without sound it stretches to about 19 minutes. For anything that long, cut the highlight first with the video trimmer: the best moment is usually 10 to 30 seconds.
Why does my compressed clip look blurry?
The bitrate is too low for the resolution. Every frame of a 1080p video has over 2 million pixels to describe; at 500 kbps there is not enough data for all of them, so detail turns to mush. Dropping to 720p or 480p gives each pixel more data, and on a phone or in a Discord chat window the smaller picture looks sharper.
Three more causes of blur:
- Fast games. Shooters and racing games change every pixel each frame and need more bitrate than slow scenes. Lower the resolution before going under 1 Mbps.
- Re-compressing a compressed file. Start from the original recording, not a clip that was already shared through WhatsApp or Discord.
- High frame rates. A 120 fps recording spends its bitrate on frames nobody will see in chat. Record highlights at 60 fps or less.
Best video settings for Discord
The best settings for Discord are an MP4 file with H.264 video and AAC sound, sized just under 20 MB. Discord plays that combination inline on desktop, web, iPhone and Android, so people watch the clip in the chat instead of downloading it.
| Setting | Best choice for Discord | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Format | MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) | Plays inline everywhere Discord runs |
| Target size | about 18 MB | Safe room under the 20 MB free limit |
| Resolution | 1080p under 1 minute, 720p up to 4, 480p beyond | Keeps enough bitrate per pixel |
| Audio | 96 kbps stereo, or removed | Speech and game sound stay clear |
| Frame rate | Keep the original, 60 fps or less | Higher rates waste bitrate in chat |
The Discord tool sets the format and audio bitrate for you and keeps the original frame rate; the only choices left are resolution and whether to keep the sound. In a browser that cannot encode H.264, such as some Linux builds, it falls back to WebM (VP9 and Opus), which Discord also plays.
Other ways to fit a video on Discord
- Upload it elsewhere and paste the link. YouTube (unlisted), Google Drive or Streamable links embed in Discord. Good for long videos, but slower to share.
- Turn short reactions into a GIF. For a 3 to 5 second loop, the video to GIF converter is often the better format.
- Send only the sound. If the audio is what matters, convert it with the MP4 to MP3 converter and share a small audio file.
- Pay for Nitro. Worth it if you share long clips every day; overkill for the occasional highlight.
Is it safe to compress videos online?
Most online compressors upload your video to their servers, process it there and keep a copy for some time. WoowTools does the work in your browser with your device's video encoder, so private recordings, game footage with your username, or screen captures of your work never leave your computer or phone. The only upload is the one you make to Discord.
Need a size other than the Discord preset? The full video compressor lets you pick a quality level or type any target size. For everything else, open Compress Video for Discord and your next clip will fit on the first try.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Discord video size limit?
Free accounts can upload files of up to 20 MB each since 13 August 2026. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. Aim for about 18 MB to leave room for the file container.
How do I compress a video for Discord without Nitro?
Open Compress Video for Discord, drop the clip, keep the Discord size target and click Compress video. Download the MP4 and drag it into Discord; it plays inline in the chat.
How long can a video be to fit in 20 MB?
About 2 minutes stay sharp at 720p and about 4 minutes at 480p. With sound, the practical maximum is just under 11 minutes; without sound, about 19 minutes.
Why did Discord say my file is too large on my phone?
Since August 2026, Discord on mobile checks the file size before compressing it, like the desktop app. Compress the video to under 20 MB first and it will upload.
Does compressing a video for Discord upload it to your servers?
No. WoowTools compresses the video in your browser using your device's encoder. The file only leaves your device when you upload it to Discord yourself.
