About this tool

This keyboard tester checks that every key on your keyboard works. Press a key and it lights up on the on-screen layout, so you can quickly find keys that do not respond, keys that stay stuck and keys that send the wrong character. It works with laptop, desktop, wireless and mechanical keyboards, right in your browser.

How to test your keyboard

  1. Click anywhere on the page so the browser receives your key presses.
  2. Press each key once. Keys you have tested stay marked on the layout.
  3. Watch the Last key panel: it shows the key's name and its code, for example KeyA or ArrowLeft.
  4. Check the Keys tested count to see how much of the keyboard you have covered.
  5. Use Held down to see which keys are pressed right now, which reveals stuck keys and lets you test several keys at once.
  6. Click Reset to start again.

Keys such as Tab, Space and the arrows are captured during the test, so they do not scroll the page or move the focus.

What the test can reveal

  • Dead keys that never light up.
  • Stuck keys that stay in the Held down list after you let go.
  • Wrong layout: if pressing Q shows A, your system keyboard layout (for example AZERTY instead of QWERTY) is set differently from your keyboard.
  • Ghosting: press several keys together and check that all of them register, useful for gaming.

If a key does not work

  • Clean under the key with compressed air, especially on laptops.
  • Try another USB port, replace the batteries or re-pair a wireless keyboard.
  • Check the language and layout settings of your operating system.
  • Test in another browser or computer to see whether the problem is the keyboard or the system.
  • Function keys may need the Fn key, depending on your keyboard settings.

Some keys are handled by the operating system and never reach a web page, for example the Windows or Command key in certain shortcuts, Print Screen on some systems and the Fn key itself. If those do not show up here, that does not mean they are broken. The same page also offers a webcam test and a microphone test.

Features

  • Visual full keyboard
  • Tested keys turn green
  • Shows key name and code
  • Rollover counter for ghosting tests
  • Reset and test again

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if all my keyboard keys work?

Press every key once. Each working key lights up and stays marked, and the Keys tested counter shows how many you have covered. Keys that never light up are not registering.

How can I find a stuck key?

Look at the Held down list. A key that stays there after you release it is stuck or sending repeated signals.

Why does the wrong letter appear when I press a key?

Your operating system is probably using a different keyboard layout or language than your physical keyboard. Change the input layout in your system settings.

Can I test several keys at the same time?

Yes. Hold down several keys together and check that all of them appear in Held down. This is how you test for ghosting.

Why does the Fn key not show up?

The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard itself and is never sent to the computer, so no website can detect it. Some system shortcuts are also blocked by the operating system.

Does it work with laptop and wireless keyboards?

Yes. Any keyboard connected to your computer works, whether built in, USB or Bluetooth.
