To convert a video to text, extract the speech from the video and run it through a speech recognition tool, then proofread the transcript. You do not have to convert the video to MP3 first: the free WoowTools video to text converter takes MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV files directly, pulls the soundtrack out in your browser and returns a punctuated transcript.
This guide covers your own video files, YouTube videos, Zoom and Teams recordings, and what to do with videos longer than 25 minutes.
How to convert a video to text (step by step)
- Open the video to text converter.
- Drop the video on the page or click to choose it.
- Leave Spoken language on Auto-detect, or choose it if the video mixes languages.
- Pick Fast or Best accuracy, then click Transcribe.
- Wait while the audio is prepared on your device and transcribed, then copy the text or download a .txt file.
Why a 2 GB video is not a problem
A 25 minute 1080p phone video can easily be 1 to 3 GB. Uploading that on a normal connection takes a long time, which is where most online transcription tools stall.
This converter never sends the video. Your browser extracts the soundtrack and shrinks it to a small mono audio file, about 9 MB for 25 minutes, and only that file goes to the AI. The picture stays on your device, and the audio is deleted right after transcription.
| What leaves your device | Size for a 25 minute video |
|---|---|
| A typical upload tool: the whole video | 1 to 3 GB |
| WoowTools video to text: mono audio only | About 9 MB |
How to get a transcript of a YouTube video
There are two cases:
Someone else's video. Most YouTube videos have automatic captions. On a computer, open the video, click the three dots or "...more" under the title, and choose Show transcript. You can copy the text from the panel. If the creator turned captions off, there is nothing to copy. YouTube Help explains how captions work.
Your own video. Transcribe the original file you uploaded, rather than relying on YouTube's automatic captions. You get cleaner punctuation, and you can reuse the text for the video description, a blog post or a caption file.
How to transcribe Zoom, Teams and Google Meet recordings
Meeting recordings are usually MP4 files:
- Zoom: local recordings are saved in the Zoom folder in Documents by default.
- Microsoft Teams: recordings are saved to OneDrive or SharePoint; download the MP4 first.
- Google Meet: recordings go to the organiser's Google Drive in the Meet Recordings folder.
Download the MP4 and drop it into the converter. For an hour long meeting, see the section on long videos below.
What can you do with a video transcript?
| Video | What the text is good for |
|---|---|
| Lectures and webinars | Study notes and searchable summaries |
| Zoom, Teams and Meet recordings | Meeting minutes and action points |
| Your own YouTube or TikTok videos | Descriptions, blog posts, a first draft of captions |
| Interviews and testimonials | Exact quotes for articles and case studies |
| Tutorials and screen recordings | Written step by step guides |
A transcript also makes a video searchable. You can find the minute where something was said with Ctrl+F instead of scrubbing through the timeline.
How to transcribe a video longer than 25 minutes
Each file can be up to 25 minutes. For longer videos:
- Open the MP4 to MP3 converter and use its start and end fields to save parts, such as 0:00 to 25:00 and 25:00 to 50:00.
- Transcribe each MP3 part in the audio to text converter.
- Paste the parts together in order.
You can also cut a video with the video trimmer if you only need one section, such as the Q&A at the end of a webinar.
How accurate is video transcription?
The AI is Whisper, which deals well with accents and background noise. What hurts accuracy in videos specifically:
- Background music. Loud music under speech, common in vlogs and ads, causes missed words.
- Several people speaking at once. Panels and meetings need more proofreading.
- A camera far from the speaker. A lapel or headset microphone helps more than any setting.
Choose Best accuracy for interviews, accents and names. It takes a little longer and counts as two runs against the fair use limit.
How to proofread a video transcript quickly
A transcript you publish or quote needs a check, but you do not have to rewatch the whole video. This routine works well:
- Read the text once without the video. Most errors show up as sentences that make no sense. Mark them.
- Search for names and numbers. Use Ctrl+F for each person, product and figure mentioned, and confirm the spelling against your notes or slides.
- Jump to the marked spots only. Play the video at those moments, at 1.25x speed if the speaker is slow, and fix the words.
- Add structure last. Break the text into paragraphs where the topic changes and add speaker names if there were several people.
For a 25 minute video this usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, compared with well over an hour to type the same transcript by hand. Count the result with the word counter if you are writing to a length limit.
Does it make subtitles?
Not directly. The result is plain punctuated text without timestamps or speaker names. To make subtitles, paste the text into a caption editor and set the timing there. That is still much faster than typing every line from scratch. Speaker labels can be added by hand while you proofread.
Video to text vs audio to text
| You have | Best tool |
|---|---|
| MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video | Video to text |
| MP3, M4A, WAV or a voice message | Audio to text |
| Nothing recorded yet | Speech to text with your microphone |

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a video to text for free?
Drop the MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file into the WoowTools video to text converter and click Transcribe. The audio is extracted in your browser, transcribed by Whisper AI, and the text is ready to copy or download.
Do I need to convert the video to MP3 first?
No. The tool extracts and shrinks the audio from the video itself. Converting to MP3 only helps when you want to split a video longer than 25 minutes into parts.
Can I get a transcript of a YouTube video?
For most videos, yes: open the video on a computer, open the description and choose Show transcript, then copy the text. For your own videos, transcribing the original file gives cleaner punctuation.
Is my whole video uploaded?
No. Only a small mono copy of the audio, about 9 MB for 25 minutes, is sent to our AI. The picture never leaves your device, and the audio is deleted after transcription.
Can it create subtitles with timestamps?
Not directly. You get plain punctuated text. Paste it into a subtitle editor and set the timing there, which is far quicker than typing captions from scratch.
