To remove audio from a video, open the free Mute Video tool, drop in your MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file, click Remove audio and download the silent copy. The picture is copied as is, without re-encoding, so it keeps its full quality, and even a long clip is done in seconds.
The file is processed in your browser and is never uploaded. Below: the exact steps, why stream copy matters, the built in options on phones and computers, and the mistakes that leave sound in a video you thought was silent.
How to remove audio from a video online (step by step)
- Open Mute Video in any modern browser, on a computer or a phone.
- Drop the video on the page, or click to choose it.
- Check the panel: it shows how many audio tracks will be removed and which format the silent file will use.
- Click Remove audio.
- Play the preview to confirm there is no sound.
- Download the silent video.
There is no account, no watermark and no upload wait, because nothing leaves your device.
Why removing audio should not re-encode the video
A video file holds separate streams: one for the picture and one or more for the sound. Removing the sound only needs the picture stream to be copied into a new file without the audio streams. That is called a stream copy or remux.
Many online editors do something heavier: they decode the whole video and encode it again with the audio muted. That costs time, adds compression artefacts, and sometimes adds a watermark. Stream copy avoids all three.
| What happens | Stream copy (Mute Video) | Re-encode (most editors) |
|---|---|---|
| Picture quality | Identical to the original | Slightly lower |
| Time for a 10 minute clip | Seconds | Minutes |
| File size | A little smaller (audio gone) | Can grow or shrink |
| Upload needed | No | Usually yes |
The tool copies H.264, H.265, VP8, VP9 and AV1 video directly. MP4 and MOV files from phones come out as MP4, and WebM stays WebM. Only an unusual codec falls back to an H.264 encode.
Removing sound is not the same as setting volume to zero
Some editors and players only turn the volume slider down. The sound track is still inside the file, and anyone who downloads it can turn it back up. If you are hiding a private conversation or a song you do not have rights to, that is not enough.
A real mute deletes the audio track. You can check it: after muting, open the file in VLC and look at Tools, Codec Information. A silent file shows only a Video stream, with no Audio stream listed.
How to mute a video on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac
Every platform has a built in way. They work, but most re-encode the video when saving.
iPhone
- Open the video in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap the yellow speaker icon at the top left so it shows a line through it.
- Tap Done. To keep the original, use Save as New Clip where offered.
Android
In Google Photos, open the video, tap Edit, then the speaker icon to mute, and Save copy. Samsung Gallery has its own video editor with a sound control; check the export is really silent before you share it.
Windows
In Clipchamp (built into Windows 11), add the video to the timeline, select it, and set the volume to 0 or choose Detach audio and delete the audio track, then export. Export re-encodes.
Mac
In iMovie, drag the clip to the timeline, right click it, choose Detach Audio and delete the audio clip, then share as a file. QuickTime cannot remove sound on its own.
If you just need the silent file fast and at full quality, the browser tool is quicker on every platform, including phones.
When you would want a silent video
- Background noise such as wind, traffic or a noisy room that distracts from what you are showing.
- Private conversations picked up by the phone microphone that should not be shared.
- Music you cannot use. A song playing in the background can get a video blocked or muted on social platforms. Remove it and add licensed music in your editor.
- Website and presentation loops. Browsers only autoplay muted video, so a silent file plays reliably in a hero section, a slide or digital signage.
- Product demos and screen recordings where you plan to add a voice over later.
How long does it take and how much smaller is the file?
Because nothing is re-encoded, the time depends mostly on how fast your device can read the file. A phone clip of a few minutes is usually done in a few seconds, and even an hour long recording finishes far faster than an online editor could upload it.
The silent file is smaller by the size of the audio track. For a typical phone video, the sound is only a small share of the file, often around 128 to 256 kbps against several megabits per second of video, so expect a modest saving, not a big one. If the clip must fit an email or a chat limit, compress it after muting.
Common mistakes when removing audio
- Muting only one track. Some MOV and MKV files carry two or three audio tracks (for example a second language or a commentary). The tool removes all of them and tells you how many it found.
- Re-encoding again and again. Every encode loses a little quality. Mute first with stream copy, then edit or compress once.
- Trusting the volume slider. As above, volume zero keeps the sound in the file.
- Forgetting the file size goal. Muting saves only the audio share of the file. To make the clip much smaller, run it through the video compressor after muting.
What to do with the audio instead
Sometimes you want the opposite: keep the sound and drop the picture. The extract audio from video tool saves the sound track as its own file, and MP4 to MP3 gives you an MP3 for any player. To cut the silent clip shorter, use the video trimmer.
Ready? Open Mute Video, drop your file and get a silent copy at full quality in seconds.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove the audio from a video for free?
Open the WoowTools Mute Video tool, drop the video, click Remove audio and download the silent file. It is free, has no watermark and needs no account.
Does removing audio reduce video quality?
Not with stream copy. The picture stream is copied into a new file without the sound, so it is identical to the original. Editors that re-encode on export do lose a little quality.
Is muting a video the same as removing the audio?
Not always. Turning the volume to zero in an editor or player can leave the sound track in the file. Removing the audio deletes the track, so nobody can turn it back up.
Can I remove sound from a video on my iPhone?
Yes. In Photos tap Edit, tap the speaker icon so it is crossed out, then tap Done. The WoowTools Mute Video tool also works in Safari if you want a copy without re-encoding.
Which video formats can I mute?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. H.264, H.265, VP8, VP9 and AV1 video is copied without re-encoding; other codecs fall back to an H.264 encode.
